It's great that this is being worked on again! Looking good. :):thumbsup

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Good to see you again Howlrunner and thanks for the question Compu...
A lot of the metal work I've done in the past has been with the "lost wax" casting method as will be the CRONOS device.
The wax I'm working with is the hard green variety of jewelers wax which is excellent for carving.
When the carving is done then each piece will be "sprued" and then "invested" in stone (it's like plaster of Paris but can be made more or less dense by the amount of water used)
Then each invested piece gets "burned out" in a Kiln and this is where all the wax "burns out" of the mold...hence the wax is "lost".
The molds are then removed HOT from the kiln and the Silver is poured in.
Once we have the cleaned up Silver pieces we can then use those to make the Master Molds for creating more.
Thanks for looking guys!

I hope you do a silicone mold of this master sculpt before you use this master wax sculpt for lost-wax casting, because accidents do happen during this process!:eek
If an accident does happen, then you can just pour more wax into the silicone mold and create another one.:cool:thumbsup
Plus, this way you wouldn't have to sacrifice this particular sculpt, and just use the mold.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

This is a great idea and one I originally had for the pre-detail portion of the sculpt.
I figured I could really screw up the waxes when I started carving the detail into them so it would be a good idea to make molds on them prior to any detail being added so that I could cast up or inject new waxes with which to start again. The only problem with that idea is that I don't have a wax injector that gets hot enough to melt GREEN jewelers wax (and truthfully I don't know if they make one)
Which basically means I would have had to re-carve any detail in wax that's less dense and therefore less capable of holding detail.

A finished casting though is perfect as no further detail will need to be added.

Thanks for the input R.M.!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

I watched the foundry by my house do wax positives using silicone molds by adding wax to the details before closing the mold and pouring the rest of the wax in. They just had a pot of melted wax, a little spatula, and a most important, a heat gun to make sure the wax melted evenly into all the details. They then just closed the mold and poured the rest of the hot wax in.
It may be worth a try!:cool:thumbsup

Incredible detail. Great progress so far.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Never seen this movie, but that's a nice looking doodad you're working on!!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks for looking guy's.
Kerr- you should definitely take this film in if you get the chance.
It was this movie and specifically this prop that first got me interested in prop creation in the first place.
There's just something about the idea of an old mystical/draconian device that brings about immortality...well, I'm risking a rant here but it really get's my imagination going.
I should have an up-date here later tomorrow.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

This is just incredible. I'd never be able to do anything this detailed!

Can't wait to see more!

and thanks for posting steps its a great help for a newbie like me!
Cheers!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Amazing !!!
Yes, it would be a good idea to do silicone molds on it before the rest of the process, safety first :)

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks for asking.
I am currently waiting on a special ordered cut crystal out of Mexico to arrive before proceeding with the project.
It's supposed to be here at the end of next week so keep your fingers crossed that it will be usable.
Thanks for your patience guy's!
