Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! COMPLETED

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

You know you have my help for whatever I can do. Just say the word

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks Clay! Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I JUST received a note in my mail saying I had a comment here!

My latest bottle auction went well on E-Bay so I'll be ordering the mold making material this next week
and get pictures up of the mold making process.

I haven't heard back from the master watch maker I contacted but I believe I will.

So I guess, right now anyway...it's a waiting period.
More when I have it!
Thanks everyone!

Two things to say to Mutant-Enemy
1. Absolutely beautiful work, very impressive, you truly have a skill in working wax.
2. My God you have have some patience! :lol

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Havent gotten any leads on the glass either--the grinding was a no go.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks Ren-man and Clay!

Clay-no worries, thanks for asking around for me.
I'm thinking the jewel on the device will be the last thing done
due to the little bit of shrinkage that will occur during the casting of that body half. So, there's time to explore options.
Thanks for thinking of me!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Awesome thread. Any updates?

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Sorry for the time away but I've been working on making and selling some other props!
Back soon with some progress!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

To help smooth out the wax surface, you can also rub it with denim and then for an almost mirror finish, I kid you not, nylon stalkings! A little trick I learned in Wax class at GIA. Whenever I'm in a shoe store I "borrow" a couple of the free ladies nylon foot things they have laying around the store for trying on shoes :p

Also for a nice clear RTV that most jewelers use for the same reason is Ditto clear:
DITTO

Always nice to see people working with wax! I still need to play with my new wax pen...

AWESOME work btw!

Thanks man! Very kind of you to offer the info. I will look into all that you have suggested!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Here's quick example of one of my waxes from class. I think we ended at 1600g or 2000g sandpaper and then hit with denim and then nylon.

Great looking ring man! I'll definitely try your technique's when it comes time to finish out the pieces for casting.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Just watched this movie!

Any update on the progress of this device?:love:thumbsup

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks for asking!
I've been distracted by other props projects
(imagine that:lol) but I DO plan to finish this.
The up-side is I now have a really decent vacu-casting machine to use in finishing off the piece.
The down side is I haven't been able to find any way to recreate the crystal for the top of the piece in anything other than optically clear Urethane...I really wanted to find a source for genuine cut crystals.
Still in the works!

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Glad to see that you are back on this-- Really like this one and the detail you are putting into it.

PS--talked to the foundry guy yesterday-- he has been concentrating on the $$$ projects so we have been put to the back a little bit here. He has some items that he was dong for me and they are on hold as well. He said he has most everythign ready, just has to get in and do the pour.

I'm sure the crystal for the Cronos device was hand-cut.
Even if you were to find a source to hand-cut crystals, they would not all be the same, and would not fit in the device perfectly. You would basically have to have them make a mold of one crystal and have them cast the rest of them in crystal. The mold itself usually runs around $350-$400. A crystal that size would be cheap to have made, it's just the mold that is expensive.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Hold on there Clay! As I mentioned...I have a couple of projects to get out of the way before I can really get back to this one. Sorry to hear the foundry guy is going to take more time but I guess since it's a favor there's really nothing to be done.

I do have one last option for the crystals before I go to Urethane. There is a method for doing it in my Kiln that involves Glass Frit and a porcelain mold.
I tried the supplier to Rio-Grande to see if they could make a mold to my specs but he seemed to think the crystal was too small to come out of the mold with the fine edges I'm looking for...something about surface tension.
My thought is to size the crystal up a bit to reduce the surface tension and then hand grind them down to the correct size.
As alway's, I'll post here when I have some progress to show!
Thanks for looking guy's.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Thanks for keeping us updated. This is really such an extraordinary and beautiful prop.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

You could go ahead and do the kiln thing and then have a lapidary shop polish them with the fine edges. I don't think they'll charge that much that service, if I remember correctly.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

My thoughts exactly...
It just so happens that a jeweler friend of mine (the one who sold me the Vacu-Casting Machine)
also has a glass/crystal grinding machine that he's willing to let me use.

Re: Guillermo del Toro's Cronos Device...digging in! W.I.P

Time for an up-date here. Hope everyone hasn't lost patience, as I'm reminded a lot of late: These things take time.
Here's what I have for now, and you can follow all the pics un-broken by following the link:
Cronos Device

I've used the time away from the Cronos Device to do a lot of thinking about it and here are a couple of the choices I've made:
[/B]
My first assembled version of the device will be a static one. That is, it will have no moving parts save for perhaps the snake winder. I have to try to acknowledge my present limitations and until I have a few more skills in mechanics I just don't want to waste anymore time trying to figure out how to make the device do things that it took them 14 different models to do in the movie.

[/B]
Secondly, I've wrestled with the idea of jumping in on the detail carving of the wax myself without having enough detailed images of certain sections and really not knowing where to start. I've gathered a few more images thanks to some very kind RPF Guy's sending them to me and I've cleaned them up. I've also turned over the detail carving of the waxes to a veteran jeweler friend of mine.
[/B]
He knew right where to start and I'll be watching his progress closely as I'm alway's interested in learning.
So, without anymore chatter, here are some pics of the beginning detail wax carving on the Cronos.

It's all about placing groups of shapes right now.
