Gipsy Danger Helmet build

Alright so here we go. My first ever pep project. Now, if this isnt the best build ever, it is my first so go easy. Any tips are appreciated.

I just finished printing the file which was FRUSTRATING because my printer dont like cardstock. But I got them anyway. You'll notice that for some reason, none of these file parts have any numbering on it, just one solid part. Probably an error on my part but t'll definitely complicate this process.

Credit to laielle (not sure how to spell it) for the pep file

Subscribed ! Good luck with this one, I had a quick look at the files but they looked very complex (maybe that's just cause I'm also building my first so I went for a IM foam build which looked simpler.)

Alright so I got some work done on the helmet today. I'm quite the perfectionist when it comes to my costumes. I dont know which is slow, me or the pepakura process. Either way, this skeleton jawline of a Gipsy Danger helmet took me 6 hours. At this rate it'll take another 6 to finish

My sister was certainly interested in what I was doing while putting this together. I lol'ed when she said I should dip it in plaster when I'm done

I didnt have a lot of time to work on my helmet like I did yesterday. Plus I had some problems with certain pieces not being places accurately and threw off the form a little bit. I was able to fix it though. My sister was lurking around me while I was doing it and she thinks its cool as hell.

I got up to the visor/eye level section of the helmet. Since tomorrow is Friday, I should be able to finish it, then spend the weekend hardening it.

You're doing a great job, especially considering you don't have your pieces don't have the identification numbers on them!

Next time before you print your pieces from Pepakura, make sure that you have the 2D Menu>Show Edge ID option checked first. That'll add the edge numbers in your print, and make assembly a heck of a lot easier. Keep it up! :thumbsup

Thanks a lot bro. Means a lot. Its a little tricky to do it without the numbers because I have to look at the computer model exactly with each piece. Longer to build but still works. I'll be sure to do that next time I print a pep file. Thanks again

Yep, I even keep the numbers on my foam templates to help with alignment. It's not just knowing which two edges go together, but also that they are properly matched up along long pieces (especially curves). It sucks to start gluing two pieces together from one end, and then discover at the other end that one side is 1/2" too long lol.

Looking forward to seeing this finished.:thumbsup

Just about done with pepping the helmet. Not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it. All I have to do now is glue on the lip that runs down the front of the head.

I didnt get to finish it since I have to get up early for a job interview. Once done, I'll apply some resin.

Now, this is where I need your help RPF members. I can get body filler at the O'reillys Auto parts store near my house, but I dont know where I could get some epoxy resin, or some type of resin that I could use in my garage. Specific stores and resin brands would help. I'm thinking Lowes or Home Depot but I head some horror stories from there so those are last resort

01/18/2014 update:

I would have finished this helmet way earlier today but I got into a car wreck and spent the majority of my evening at the hospital. Nothing major, just a head contusion.

I got the helmet done. Overall, not super happy with it, especially the back of the head and how the top of the head came together. Pieces there are so small that I must have screwed it up. Either way, its complete and I'm ready to apply some resin.

Look at how screwed the the back of the head got

I think it will fit. I didnt even have to scale it

Where can I get some good resin that I can use indoors?

Update 01/24/2014:
Now that I FINALLY have the materials to start glassing, thats what I will be spending most of tomorrow doing. Stay tuned for that

Alright so I finally did more to the helmet. Got i glasses on the outside and now waiting for it to dry. I hope I used enough hardening catalyst.

I only have one picture of the glasses helmet because it eventually got dark outside. Dont worry about the ideal temperature. The helmet is on a stand in front of a space heater. I'm going out to rotate it 90 degreees every 10 minutes. I think I'll cut out the visor first THEN lay fiberglass cloth on the inside. What do you all think?

Alright so new day. I let my helmet dry overnight and it came out pretty well minus some drip and puddle spots pf the resin here and there. Now to lay resin on the inside with fiberglass cloth to make it strong enough to sand. Then I'll apply some bondo

I think Ill lay the cloth before cutting out the visor

looking good :)

Thanks a lot. Its my first build. Trying not to make a costly mistake. I'm tip toeing

Alright so I layed down some fiberglass cloth on the inside of the helmet. It was a HUGE pain in the ass but it seems to have worked. Waiting for it to dry now. My only problem is that it smells VERY strong on the inside. Anyway to cover it up?

You know that this is just gonna lead to us watching you build a suit later, right. ;)
