I have a question that I don't think has been asked, but it's hard to read every post. ;) Do you have recommendations for getting a helmet gel coated to match the armor? I'm worried that the shade and translucency won't look right with traditional spray paint.

And actually, this question would apply to repairs too. Inevitably, something will have to be altered/repaired/etc. Is the product you're using something we can order so that we are able to match?

Hey

We will definitely be doing a TLJ helmet to match the armor exactly, otherwise it would be a case of trying to get as close as you can with a pre-mixed or mixed to match aerosol. Many body shop suppliers should offer a mix to match service for a rattle can whilst you wait. Not sure how vast the range of whites usually is to to be honest. I'll check as I'll be making a visit to my local within next few days.

Ok, thanks for the info. Do you see any issues with the difference in paint type? I'm not experienced with gel coats, but I would assume it gives off a different sheen than normal paint.

The real visual difference would be because the gelcoat surface is super flat from the mould and you can't get that perfect of a surface with sprayed paint. But you can get close if you flat it and compound polished it gently. With the helmet being separated by the neck and not directly overlapping a gelcoat part and with a decent colour match you would struggle to notice any difference.

I'll check with the guys at the body shop to see what they say too and get back to you.

Ok, that makes sense. Yeah, I don't see that being a real issue because our own paint jobs aren't that consistent throughout the armor anyways. Probably the only thing I'd want to be able to do is make repairs and not have it look like a patch, but perhaps the automotive paint route would be the way to go.

Random question. The shin seam gap seems a little wide. Can this be tightened up?

Hey Clint, the legs are cast in two separate halves. The ones in the pic were just temporarily held together for test fitting and the sake of a photo. The calves/back halves have actually been adjusted and re-moulded since that photo as they needed to be a little wider at the bottom too. ;)

Ok, great!

One other thing. And sorry if this is very late in the game to be bringing it up so totally feel free to ignore it. :) I'll just keep mentioning stuff if there's room for it. So on the chest, it seems that your angles near the armpits have a sharper bend instead of more of a curve. Can that be rounded a bit more?

Hey

Yes the chest has been completely rebuilt and the abs reshaped mostly around the sides and back and the final moulds made for those. You'll see once we start pulling them they are much more accurate overall.

You weren't kidding Paul, you really have been putting a lot of work it to this, really exited to see what the finished product looks like

Not to be getting too far ahead or anything, but if you had to estimate an approximation date for the helmet, when do you think that would be? 2018?

Hey bigkilo,

No, as soon as all the other components are moulded and being cast work on the helmets will begin properly. I've got another test or two today/this weekend to do with the layup to finalise it but we're beginning casting final parts once that's finalised starting with all the chests and abs next week. Giving the yoke mould a little longer to cure so shoulders and cods will be next, then the yokes so photos of all that next week! I have the thighs still to finish shaping the back of them properly, the arms need a bit more work but no shaping just detailing before moulding. So the helmets will be available within a few weeks of finishing the other parts. As is we're looking to have everyone's on the run currently shipped before the end of September so helmets will be in October.
