Foam Iron Man - Imperfect Start - Con Page 5 / Sound Page 6!

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - $5 Arc & Painting!

What a great build. The improvement you have made in your foam skills is incredible!

They may not be perfectly screen accurate, but those boots are awesome! Very nice work!

Thank you both!

Yeah, after I scaled the movie accurate boots to my size 12 shoe, they just looked waaaaayyy too clownish. So on my design I squared off the front a little. They still look like good mud-hole stomping boots though!

I've started my gloves! I basically refuse to do the glove armor in foam, as I don't want people to grab just a handful of foam on a handshake, so I bought some motor cycle riding gloves with built-in armor to alter. I'm just going to do the palm and paint the rest. A good paint and detail job makes everything look better, and Iron Man's hands are always beat up anyways so I figure not being totally screen accurate on the gloves is ok.

Both of these items should be done paint-wise and detailed by tonight.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - $5 Arc & Painting!

did you seal the foam before primer and paint ?

Yup. Everything is sealed with a nice thin coat of Plasti-Dip, then layered until it has a nice shine. I use Aluminum as a base-coat after the Plasti-Dip because it makes the reds look so much better.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - $5 Arc & Painting!

how much coat of plastidip ?

Depends on your foam brand and thickness. Start with 1 light layer, let it soak in, do another light layer and let it dry until it looks flat. Then keep going until you see it have a slight shine to it. Probably 5 layers. I've worked with Plasti-Dip for 10 years so I can get away with applying it thicker than most at 3 layers.

Leg test fitting, minus the Hip Pods and Knee Joints.

And a test body shot. I think my Neck Brace is holding the torso a little high. Or my Cod is too low and is pulling the Abs down. I'm getting black compression pants tonight after work so I'll know then.

You've come a long way man. It is looking really great!

Yours and mine both. My first helmet is sitting on my shelf of shame! :lol

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - $5 Arc & Painting!

Looking great!

Something I have done to ensure the cod piece sits high enough, is buy a cheap pair of braces (Gordon Gekko style haha) and attach those to the cod piece by gluing small strips of webbing to the inside of it. I can then put on the cod and itll be held in the right place by the braces.

You might also want to look at the scale of your chest, which doesnt quite look wide enough to meet your shoulder bells, giving the other parts like the abs and helmet the impression of being large. A couple of extra strips to fill in the gap between the shoulder and chest might help here.

The problem with me is that I'm tall, have small shoulders and a big head. So I think once I try the suit on with my compression pants instead of slacks and alter the neck brace, I will have to make due with my build.

We can't all have the perfect iron man build. (im too short! >_<) but it's all for fun and looks great! Remember, 99.9% of the population will lose their mind over how amazing it is! The other 0.01% reside here and can actually notice the imperfections! It's way better than this guy!! :lol

Boots = done!

Flat Black shading and striping has been added to hide cut lines and highlight certain areas.

Wrist Armor made and installed!

Thighs and Shins done!

Hands = done!

All parts have now been made and I just need to try it all on at once and tweak what needs, and it's done! I did try to put the legs on last night, but they didnt fit, as my size 12 would not go past the bottom opening because the Plasti-Dip and paint has firmed-up the foam from before it was painted, so its not as flexible. So I must make a removable panel or something, which is exactly what I didn't want to do.

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - $5 Arc & Painting!

Hmmm... I think I need to make my Chest a bit bigger. Agreed?

Still tweaking and also making Thigh filler pieces and a new thinner Neck, so this photo is still an incomplete suit

Re: Foam Iron Man - An Imperfect Start - Tweaking Question Page 4

Seeing all the armour together, I think it looks great! The chest looks fine in this shot and I dont think it needs to be any bigger.

If you wanted to make it seem wider, you could just add strips onto the armholes so that the small gaps there connect up with the shoulder bells, but this is being really picky if you ask me!

What a great job you have done, this is really superb!
