FINISHED!: Venator-class star destroyer - Revell 1/2256 w heavy mods - build log. (pic heavy)

Do you know who makes the photo etch you used for the windows? I've seen it used before, but never saw the brand. 1/12 or 1/24 motorcycle grill?

Its made by Japanese company called Acu-stion. 1/12 motorcycle radiator panel. I have a link at home which I can post if you want it

I like the added detail and the mods you've done. That's alot of work and it's really paying off! I have one of these kits in the stash too and hope to get to it one of these days.

Thanks! I think i have a link somewhere to a site. But it is listed as discontinued.

Here it is.
it certainly looks as though you and Invar hatched from the same egg:lol:

When I see all these amazing builds I think we all came out of that egg!

Top shelf work btw(y)

Thanks!

Indeed. Posted a link above.

No, it's just a very transmissible disease 'The Greeblies'. Once you get infected with the desire for detail, you just cannot stop trying to put 8 foot details into a 2 foot scale hunk of plastic.
If you say it like this... it sounds like we are a bunch of weirdos... :D. I must admit the rabbit hole for detail is a deep and endless one.

Thats nice! Eager to see more of that.

Hey guys! Time for some juicy updates!!!

Part XV: Finishing greeblies, lights, lights, fiber, lights, lights....

K, like the title suggests I finished the 'chipping' or 'adding greeblies'. Its not as much as my two 'idols' ;). But its good enough for me and I'm happy. Every zone that received extra detail was handled with the same amount and effort. So no slacking at the end.

My total amount is just less dense compared to more hardcore people, but hey... this is my FIRST one.

So to start of I finished adding details to the upper hull and lower hull. And even added a few to the trenches. Some pictures ...

I really like this shot:

I also tackled the 'nose'. It had almoust no detail and was in dire need of some, I went with antenna's and sensors to give it a more interesting look.
Some might be to long though, any toughts? I might shorten them a bit. It also received some fiber optic holes.

Having finished all the 'chipping' I turned my attention to drilling the rest of the fiber holes and starting some electronic pre-paint assembly.
Some pictures of the fiber holes:

So electronics. Its a bit of a b***h to tackle. I still need to paint, but I can only paint when I put in all my fibers, and those require some management for the other pieces that need place. So I started of by spraying the engine well black, and the tail gray and installing my engines. this gives me the opportunity to handle the huge amount of wires that come out of the engines.

This in turn gives me an overview of the room left for fiber placement, the custom side hangar etc.

So I started by installing my engines:

I was about to start cutting and soldering when it hit me that I wouldn't be able to reach the fiber behind the turbo lasers. So..... I did that first (its kinda an avalanche effect. Now this turned out to be going very smooth and I am SOO HAPPY with the result:

I secured all the fibers with hot glue on the inside and placed&cut them one by one to reach the middle part of the Hull.
There they are binded together, cut flush and stuffed in heat shrink (which isn't used to shrink but as a tube) together with a blue led.

Yes that last picture is how I was working on it, upside down. Lemme turn that for ya...

That is it for now, but tomorrow I have a day off!

more to come! I hope you enjoy

I'm a big fan of those nose antenna - I really like that. You could even add a smaller aerial to go on the far right side one so it looks telescopic
I like the details you've added. More doesn't necessarily mean better.
Keep the updates coming

This is awesome! I have very fond memories of building the AMT ERTL fibre optic Star Destroyer as a kid. It was entrusted (foolishly) to my brother, and has been lost to the sands of time unfortunately. It's up there on my list to build another one at some point! Seeing builds like this always gives me that itch to get started!

Awesome job!

I'm glad you like them, a dish sounds a good idea. I'll see if I can make a tiny one.

My back, fingers and neck... aaarghh.. but its done! :p. I added wood glue at the back to hold them in place, so that tomorrow when I try to route them and find place for the leds they will stay put.

Part XVI: Primer!!!!! <----------- PRIIMMEEERRRR

Hey guys! So I came to a point where I had some choices. Either I install everything and try to paint later, or I primer/paint first and then install.
Now me being me I went for the middle road. Priming - installing - painting.

Now I do not own an airbrush nor do I want to buy one for the moment ( I plan on doing so soon cause this hobby is really sticking on me, and I love it)

Due to this I tried something out with my primers. I have a can of 'citadel black' from Games workshop. And a can of Vallejo Gray. Now these two have properties that gave me an idea. The citadel black covers really really well and is a fine layer. The vallejo needs long passes to really cover and is really really fine. So I tried something out, I wanted to use the primers to get my base color. So no more basing after just detailing, I also didn't want it to look plastic or 'toy' after painting. So some kind of non-uniform coverage.

This took a while but here are the results and I'm sooooooo HAPPYYYYY. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Just in short what you gonna see here:

-All trench parts primed in black front and back.
-Hull front and back primed in black.
-Hull front and back passes of grey but I waited longer at some parts and went over some others rather quickly creating a uniform surface.
Also I only sprayed from one angle giving the whole hull some really subtle shadows, adding to the size illusion (In my opinion).
-Trench parts got 4-5 passes from gray really quick from one angle only, giving deep shadows and a 'darker' look.

Now some of you pro's are probably gonna say 'wth this isn't pretty) but i really really like it.

note: i didn't take out my reflex camera but I did put my parts on a white background, with a light. Reflex camera is for finished shots :).

I hope you like it, I'm writing this as its drying, next up is installing all the fiber and then closing her up for finish painting!

Wow! For someone without an airbrush, you've certainly made it look like you have one. Im viewing this on my phone, so its hard to see the full effect but from what I can see, it looks bloody awesome!! Great stuff!

That Star Destroyer needs a haircut. :p

Great work!

Yes it does!!! Soon :p. Also it just gave me a heart attack. No light came from the fibre's in the turbolaser wells. I almost cried! I thought I'll never get that open to check, I tried, it came apart really smooth, the + cable of the two leds for the turbo laser came out of the speed clam. Tomorrow I'm glueing them all in with hot glue and re-marrying the hulls after that awe-full divorce!

Awesome work! Those side panels look great! Can't wait to see how it looks when everything's trimmed back!

It’s been a very inspiring, informative and enjoyable journey with you so far Hopli, and here’s to you, staring at the finish line !?.
Absolutely stunning work mate, and I can’t wait to see how she’s going to be finished by you ...., brilliantly - I’m sure !:D

So yeah! The final part is here.

Part XVII: Finished.

So picking up from where we left off.

I started by adding the decals. The decals where solid but I applied 20+ layers of softener to get the 'painted on' effect.

Gcvhr6K.jpg

VhtEiEi.jpg

Then I re-painted and washed the side trenches with a darker color followed by the first haircut!

lP5Kgih.jpg

After that followed painting, dark panels, light panels, panel line wash (I didn't have thinner so this was a pain to do but I like the effect).

Finished pictures in a sec, first I needed a base to put the model on. I decided on a black MDF piece in the silhouette of the venator. The tube holding the model up would come out of the bridges, with a mirror in front to admire the bottom hangar when viewed. Also a integrated switch to enable the lights and an easy connection to a 3v-12v adapter (I bought one that is adjustable cause one led flickered with my 12v supply but is fine with my 9v).

Then we are done!
I'm not a professional photographer and I don't have a good light setup, these are the best I could do. I have an ex colleague who is very good at this and will help get me some finished professional pictures when he has time.
