Sorry there hasn't been any updates. I have had to take a pause to fill a ton of halloween orders. I am hoping to get back to it here in a week or so... I did find the Mag light... I didn't have a lathe so I cast it with an attachment to fit it into my drill ... this is the progress on my first test. I think it went pretty good and I learned a lot so that my next one will be perfect

oh side note... on the final the post in the back will be cut off and the center will be drilled out hollow to fit on the eye stalk and for mounting the LED in. The post in the back was only for chucking it in the drill.

P L E A S E bring this thread back to life...

We got into Chi-Fi 2015 early this weekend (helps to know people!) and through dumb luck, ended up sitting and chatting with Gigi Edgely for about 45 minutes.
I was blown away by how genuinely nice and sincere she is. Anyone walking by could have thought we had been friends with her for years.

Hey everyone, I am sooo sorry to have disappeared for so long. The project still lives and I finally got word that some money is coming in so that I can finally afford the molding of this massive project. As a side note I also just finished Gigi's gun from season 4!! As far as I know this one has never been done... here are some pics of it

As I clean up the DRD (poor guy has dust all over him) I will start taking photos of him and the molds... as soon as the molds are done I will offer kits so you all can throw in any electronics you want... and as soon as I get mine done with all the electronics and movements and lighting I will probably offer one or two completely done and working (the done and working ones will be a few months down the line for sure)

If these come out of the molds in good shape, you can definitely sign me up for a couple of kits. I'd love to mount these on hacked Roomba's and let them wander aimlessly around my shop!

DELIGHTED that you've returned to this project!!!

Hi guys
I can only complement you on how amassing this project is turning out.
I also worked on Farscape here in OZ, in the props construction department.
The DRDs were the responsibility of the Creature Shop, so I had no dealings with them.
But I can say that this show was one of the highlights of my carear in show buiss.
Keep up the great workGary on the bridge of the Farscape.jpg

Okay... sorry I went poof again, but with VERY good reason. Just had a pulse pistol dropped in my lap that was from the screen used mold ... I am working to turn it into a perfect screen accurate "Hero" prop. It will have the 4 chasing/alternating lights in the back window that activate during the power-up sequence with the sound, hidden overload switch in the scope side window that when triggered cause the lights in the back to light up and chase/alternate faster, light in both the overload window and in the laser pointer, and of course the fire sound with 8000 mcd red LED in the barrel.

While doing that I have been pulling out the drd and starting to clean it up. I also think the sound board I am using for the gun will be useful for the DRD... it holds 5 different sounds per board .. 2 of them should be more then enough sounds and then maybe one more if we want the for 1812 overture in there.

Here are some pics of the work in progress

Awesome! Thanks for the update! Adafruit makes an excellent Sound FX board with an onboard amp, USB upload, backpack power for charging without disassembly and 2 or 16 MB of memory. Tiny and super easy to use. Worth a look!

looking over the Adafruit boards I am really excited ... it looks like those boards are exactly what i need but electronics isn't my strong suit...if anyone has experience with these boards and which of the boards would be best for led controlling at the same time I am certainly all ears!

Hopefully James' PM answered your questions. If not, follow the link below. An FISD trooper installed the Adafruit board in an E-11 blaster. He walks through the file setup, which is as easy as plugging the board into your computer and naming some files. When plugged in, the board shows up as a USB drive. Scroll down through the thread and watch any of several videos demonstrating speakers and even transducers for playing sounds. Transducers look interesting and sound incredibly loud...almost too loud! I love the fact that I can load files onto the board, then bury it in the prop. The Lipoly backpack allows remote charging without removing the battery. LED control will be limited, but if you read all the information about this board in the Adafruit Learning System, you'll find there's an "Activity" pin which changes state when a sound is played. This pin could be used to trigger an LED or an LED board with pre-programmed sequences. LOTS of possibilities here. Check out the link!

I am so glad to be getting back to the DRD and to be re-making some of the really bad parts I did the first time around... to show you what I mean.. here is the center piece of the DRD (the one that raises up with the rotating red lights underneath)... the one on the left was my first attempt... the one on the right is what I knocked out today.

It is so nice to finally have the right tools for the right job!!

as a side note .. I love the idea of putting a roomba in the DRD... I might want to take a moment to let you know that the DRD width at it's smallest point is about 8" and it's length is about 12"... roomba's are 13+" round... there is a Scooba, Braava, or a Mint that might fit .. I have never taken one apart though so you might get a roomba to fit, but it wouldn't (most likely) be a straight simple operation.
