Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

It looks more like the dome from a surface mounted dome light. I have something very close on my boat. I've also seen them in RVs

Interesting Brass Etching Procedure.

Looks like a negative of Kylash's drawing would do the trick nicely. I imagine two negatives, as I think the number dial will require two phases.

I do something similar and was going to try it but I'm off on vacation for a week and a half so I won't be able to till after I return

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

Micro Mark has an etching set on sale this week but it's only does 3"x3".
It could probably be adapted to do something larger.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

Just got an aluminum fly box in the mail. It's not a Wheatley, but identical dimensions, down to the raised "grip" on the edges opposite the hinge to aid in opening. It does have eight small rivets around the bottom half egde that hold in the inner liner. No four "bumps" in the corners of the top and back. Silver finish with a screened logo on the front. I think that the rivet holes could be filled prior to painting the outside and it would be identical.

I am also curious about the possibility of etching the logo and dial numbers. If the frontplate were two thin pieces of brass, the numbers could be etched into the lower piece and the logo on a top piece, then the two sandwiched together. Could the name be cut through the top and appear engraved with a backing piece? Just a thought for the laser cutting brass styrene.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

Well I made the jump and received the Wheatley box in gold today. I am playing with some of the faceplate templets and think everyone is on the right track here. I am one of the artisticly disabled. I am hoping someone will eventually sell the faceplates to be completed by the purchaser.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

I use a mixture or Muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide. I plan on miling the recess for the dial and then stamping the numbers in. Once cleaned up it should look pretty good I hope.

I've also found sound record/playback boards for as little as $6 each.

I also went by JoAnns to see if they had any clock face lenses but the store where I live is to small to carry something like that.:unsure

Yup, I also went to Joann's and they didn't even carry those clocks. Looks like it's an item that's only sold on their online store.''

That was one of the first notions I had, in regards to the TV lens...Unfortunbately I looked everywhere and couldn't a surface dome light that was the sorrect size and shape.

those jacks on the side appear to be about 3/10 of an inch, just measuring here, or about 7-8mm, around the outside.

Yeah, that's the same measurement I got.
I ordered a set of the other jacks, so I hope they're closer to 7-8mm.

Oh, and got this from a hires publicity shot. That little stand will be the next project after we finish this

It looks like it might be a sheet music holder, with a custom stand (Probably from an old brass candle holder.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Looked at this at Michaels Arts and Crafts today:

It is also only 2 3/4" across the face of the clear glass and the outside edge is too sharp.

Where are all the 3" clock faces!!!!!!:cry

That might have been the correct size.
Keep in mind that the hole cut into the faceplate is 3", then there's about an 1/8 of an inch gap going around the entire perimeter of the actual lens face. Which means that actual face diamter might be about 71-72mm...THat's just one mm off from 2 3/4"

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I too couldnt find any good clock faces that would work, checked out alarm clocks too.

Also, got the left knob in the mail yesterday, is there supposed to be a little screw on one side to tighten the inside? Never noticed it in any caps.

couldnt get to the laser yesterday, but hopefully today.

Ive not seen brass platesd in the thickness we need, so not sure about the etching. Honestly, this mirrored styrene is going to look exactly the same after weathering.

Yup, those knobs all come with a set-screw. You'd have to be at a pretty low angle to see it.

It's odd that you can't find the correct thikness brass sheets.
They usually sell them at Ace hardware, or at hobby shops. THey come in these little plastic bags, and have different thicknesses -

As a matter a fact I have a left over sheet from one of my previous projects (unfortunately theres a hole drilled in it), but it's about the right thickness.

Question about the layered styrene - When the top brass layer is etched, will the styrene underneath show through ?

If the styrene is white, it might look odd with the with white lettering/numbers.

None of the caps really show that angle...
THere's this screencap, which shows a little something there, but it's hard to make out -

the mirrored styrene is black. I figure with the paint weathering done to the surface, you can get some into those cracks to make it match as its suposed to. those recessed areas are supposed to be darker anyway.

regarding the brass, id love to do it in brass, but this laser cutter just cant do it, not strong enough, so someone ele would have to do that. Im pretty sure you guys weill be surprised with how good this styrene will look once aged up though.

otherwise, slowly getti'n there...

Shiny metal box arrived today, made very welcome. :)

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

anyone have any plans for the box weathering? Im thinking of going over the whole thing with a transparent brown and then doing the sponging of a darker brown, then sealing the whole thing 9having masked off the gold lip of course)

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth

Just got an email from the place I ordered the red dome cap from.
They are out of stock but have some on order.

Must be a popular item.:lol

There are a couple of varieties of that red dome: one has thicker and fewer striations than the other, and that's the one that appears to have been used on the original. Minor point, as from a foot or so away you'd never know.

I plan to weather it a bit during the paint application, but not excessively. The only Farnsworth that looks really weathered is the full-flash photo from Wired; the ones on the show just look flat brownish.
