Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Found these at Radio Shack

8mm OD

But the Knurled part is the nut so you have a break line showing, can't really tell if it is that way on the original.

And the two small notches in the knurling for tightening are not on the backside so you can tun it around.

Yeah, the kurled washer isn't thick enough...Also, if the OD is interpreted the same way as the other jacks that I found, then it would make the entire thing way too big. (The OD is actually the measurement of the plug that goes into the hole...Not the outer part of the port.)

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

For those with the Wheatley 9601, how much depth is left behind the panel
after the bulbs are installed?

I had this (probably) crazy idea of using a PIC or PC/104 microcontroller to drive a small LCD and speaker.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

BTW, I got the red indicator lens today -

Here's a photo of the layout so far (I used your templat as a placeholder. Hope you don't mind)

no problem man, thats why i posted it :) Regarding the jacks, my scaled shot is just the front, so im not sure how id scale the side. I honestly havent looked very close at those jacks yet.

Man you werent kidding about those crystals, couldnt freaking find a smooth one ANYWHERE. All faceted. Should get my red indicator and left knob tomorrow.

I also picked up a supposed "3 inch" magnifying glass to use for the tube, but when i broke it open, i found it was closer to 3.5 inches...gonna see if the laser can cut that to size.

Well, i didn't technically buy the entire bulb for the indicator light, so there aren't any guts protruding down under the faceplate. All i bought was the domed red lens.

If it helps, the space below the faceplate should be approx 13mm.

As for the text issue, I went and looked at the text again, and it seems that the entire text is Moonshine script/Licious Script...No Ballpark Script for the letter "F".

Since I couldn't find the text anywhere for free, I decided to just create the text in vector by tracing the bitmap generated with the word "Farnsworth" on one of the Font sites -

Try using that one production photo (The one that shows all three members of the cast standing around the table.
THere's a pretty good view to scale the jacks there.
I already scaled it and the outer diameter comes out to about 7-8mm.
I just want another opinion to see if im wrong or if Im missing something.

I got a bunch of material yesterday for the faceplates, the brass plates i found were way too thin to be for the front plate, but cut one out by hand anyway. Ill be trying the mirrored styrene tomorrow at the laser. I think the styrene I got is a good thickness.

Looking good so far.

I posted a website where the sell the correct versions of the crytals.

Damn that sucks.

Ive been looking to see if I can find a lens that has the little lip step around the edge (Like the on on the prop).
If it doesn't have a lip, it's going to be hard to attach to the communicator.

This is all fantastic info. Like someone else here said, its like the RPF of old where research and sharing was key.
In regards to the faceplate....... Has anyone thought of taking the layout to a trophy/ awards shop? They engrave on brass all day long. All the details could be engraved and then dry brushed in with color. if you wanted to cut out the details, you already have a nice crisp line to guide you.

It wasn't a trophy shop, but they worked with trophy shops to do more custom stuff, did a lot of award plaques and things like that, too. It was simply an egraving shop i went to.

Took a cad file in and they were able to etch it into black plexi for me, pdq. The biggest issue was I had to go through the cad file meticulously looking for double lines as the engraving program would etch over an existing line how ever many duplicates were under it. Could cause issus.
My etchings were the holocron facplates and the design. They had no issues.

If you try and etch a cutout, just make sure it has not closed shapes in side of a closed shape. I.e., the letter 'o' or 'e'.

I can take a copy to place I used if no one can find a place.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

The 3" lens reminds me of those small lights you push the lens to turn on and off. The cheapo flying saucer shaped lights you get a wallyworld.. It would have the step to prevent it from coming out of the housing. Just an idea....

dang man, you got it! any chance you could send me that vector file to work in Illustrator 8, i could then put it into the layout we've got working up here.

awesome.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I went through the pilot episode last night and did caps of the Farnsworth.
I still need to go through and crop the rest of them but here is a start.

By request, a faceplate I cleaned up from a screenshot:

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

WOW, great cleanup job!

I just laid the Fransworth text over the photo and it's an exact match. Licious/Moonshine script is definitely the text.
Anyhow, I was looking around the house and I noticed we had an old clock with a plastic lens on it.

So I took it off the housing and tested the size in comparison to the prop -

Pretty close match -

Looks good. Hit the back of it with some Krylon Pewter paint, and you'll have a great looking screen.

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

Awesome gadgets! Love the show!

HEY! Someone needs to post an interest thread in the JY about a run of these. Oh, I see someone DID. Cool. :)

I guess the Tesla would be doable as well if someone could do the "glass" parts.

I am NOT selling anything here! NO WAY.

Now, back to the discussion thread....

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

A tiny Farnsworth for a tiny agent. This one is made from a regular Altoids tin.

(Just to clarify -- this is a 10-minute job with a printout and a bit of gold and brown paint) :)

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

I have been watching this thread for awhile now and i have to say this is awesome stuff!

I just watched the four available episodes and I really like the show. I hope it gets a green light for another season where they can really develop the characters further.

I definately either want to make one of these or buy one. It all depends on whether or not someone can make the face plate with the engraving on it. So far this thread has been an excellent resource for the parts to build one of these. ^_^

Great job guys!

Re: Warehouse 13 Props Research Thread - Farnsworth, Tesla Gun...

OK I went through the other 3 episodes.
A few interesting things.

First off Ep 2/3 the rivet on the back.
farnsworth14.jpg

Now on this one in Ep 3 The pin under the screen is missing off and on during the episode, the top and left pins appear to be loose as well, also notice the wear around the "camera" lens.
This is the field Farnsworth
farnsworth11.jpg

Now this is the one used just before a commercial but is also seen in Artie's office in Ep 4.
The pins are lifted on the right and bottom and the wear seams to be the same as the one in Ep3.
farnsworth13.jpg

And here is the close up from the opening credits showing some of the detail on the numbers on the plate.
Notice that the area with the numbers is inset.
