Farnsworth Discussion

I just clicked it and it worked. I have no ideal why it isn't working!

I just tried it and got the same thing, a white page with a tiny box in the upper left corner with an x in it, only this time I happened to have a flash player opened and I got a notice that the file was captured. It could be that I am missing something on my pc that wont allow me to view the page but I still got the file. Thanks, now to see if i can get it in my phone.

Import it into iTunes. Right-click it in iTunes and select "Convert to AAC" (or something along those lines). This will create an m4a file. Right-click on that and select "Show in Finder" (Mac) or "Show in Windows Explorer" (windows). Change the extension from m4a to m4r. Import it into iTunes. It'll automatically show up under your ringtones.

Yep the aforementioned Ford Radio glass and the cheaper laboratory watch glass will both give a good result. The Ford glass is somewhat heavier and a little wider but quite a bit dearer. If you are building down to a price go with the 80mm lab glass. They are really cheap.

Thanks! I love how everyone is so helpful here. :) I'm not sure what to use for the screen though...but I'll think of something.

=jedibugs;2698162]It's daunting. I spent a few days reading every post once.

It is quite a slog doing it from scratch.

I used a heavily modified off-the-shelf rotary switch from a local place for my build, but I found one that I'm planning on using for my next couple.-Shawn

I found a fairly cheap single pole 11 position one it works well with the legend inscribed on the faceplate. Also it's not very thick.

I folded the pins flat and soldered to them. Obviously I don't need all 11 positions but makes it nice. I have 5 of them wired up for different sounds when you push the button.

Last post on the ringtone, I promise. After several failed attempts and much aggrevation I went to bed. Today I found a nice sound file (0:29.3 seconds long) and a walk through that did the trick and now I have a great and loud farnsworth ringtone on my iphone. Thought I would share in case anyone else is interested. BTW, on the ringtone site I just downloaded the sound to my pc and didnt bother with signing up for their website or downloader.

Trust Apple to make it so difficult. On my Samsung I just copy the soundfile to the phone (bluetooth or cable) and then select use this file as a ringtone.

Any online source or a manufacturer and part number? Looks good and I'm upgrading the 2 Farnsworths we've made so far to sound.

I bought it from a local (Australia) parts seller. I don't have access to the Farnsworth at the moment to check and their website doesn't specify. Probably Chinese made. I think I bought two but not sure where the other is.

This one on Ebay looks much the same.

If it's the same one, it is configurable from 1 pole 2 position to 1 pole 11 (or 12) position by means of a little locking thing.

I scored this weekend! While in Oregon, I visited a Cabela's in search of a fly box. No luck, but I found a couple of gift card tins. They're about the right size (for my build at least), but the major con is that there is 3D lettering. Is there any way to flatten out the letters?

It is specifically a Richard Wheatley 9601GD gold aluminium fly box as mentioned in the parts list (though it says brass) and in many other posts. Box painted brown - inner fillet is left gold.

Pic of one unpainted with a screen sitting on top.

By the way the main Wheatley site seems to be broken when I just checked now. No product info showing.

Has anyone found a good on-line source for a push button that will fit the hole in the jedibugs/russrep faceplate?

Just search the web for a Switchcraft 201 or 202 push button. They haven't been made in some years, so you'll need to hope for finding used ones. They do pop up now and again. A while back, I was able to get four from the same place for just a few bucks each.

Any thoughts guys? We've got Eddie and Saul both coming to our show this year and want to make sure my Tesla and Farnsworth are both ready. Escutcheon glued or soldered?
