Farnsworth Discussion

I have put my farnsworth parts up for sale in the junkyard! Just thought I would post it here incase someone was looking for a kit?

Unfortunately I can't take the credit for this.I just bought the finished product. The face is balsa wood with a gold foil sheet that has the details printed on it. I haven't looked at the guts behind yet.

But for the price the same as a faceplate I couldn't pass it up.

Now I absolutely HAVE to try making my own(improved upon) model.

Oho. Very nice. The faceplate proper looks great -- how'd you do it?

I have a pretty decent little Farnsworth made out of an Altoids tin.It even plays the buzzing sound when you push the middle button and the red light blinks! :love

Looks great!

Does anyone have a working link to a farnsworth ringtone for iphones? I have found some old ones and even have a few on my itunes but they wont work on the phone. Itunes has a farnsworth app that makes the screen look like a farnsworth but its just idiotic to me that they didnt include the sound effects or ringtone with it. Any help will be appreciated.

I am sorry I don't know about the card stock, but what mystery are you referring to? Did I miss something?

OK, so I'm trying to make a Farnsworth faceplate for as little as possible and i thought "what if I print the decals on gold card paper and print it out? Then I can make hole for the knobs and switches and stuff."

Cool - that's an innovative idea. :) Maybe get them printed on gold foil adhesive backed labels like the later TNG film pill labels and apply it to any material you like from styrene to card stock?

HEHE, I know that it will work well as someone did a large run of them a few months back on Ebay & Etsy.

Just go to Ebay and type in - Silhouette Printable Gold Foil Adhesive backed sheets. You can get an eight pack of 8.5x11 for around $10.

You have come into this discussion very late haven't you? Pretty much every option for making a faceplate has been mentioned in here at some point. Metal, styrene, balsa, all sorts.

Yeah, I am relatively new. I haven't checked all the pages though.

It's daunting. I spent a few days reading every post once.
Most of what you need is in the very first post. I made up a quick and dirty list of some additional links when someone needs some help:
For the right-side push button, you'll need to do a Google/eBay/Amazon search for the Switchcraft 201 or 202 push button (either works). They're no longer made, so it's just a roll of the dice to find one.

I was able to acquire production-used sound files for the ringing, pick-up and hang-up sounds. You can download them from my Dropbox here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/gc4nny1a4ag9n5z/FarnsworthFX.zip

Here's what I use for my main display dome: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb...~S3HB0MDJEQ16614732124q~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000024Q

Some people use these cheaper lab dishes, as well (I prefer the fit of the ford glass, but these definitely work, it just goes a little wider under the faceplate, which can make for a tighter fit of any electronics) http://www.ctechglass.com/ctech-dc0008004-p-204.html

I used a heavily modified off-the-shelf rotary switch from a local place for my build, but I found one that I'm planning on using for my next couple. I've gotten it in and it fits great. You can find it here: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail...xfBSkZZJbGO3VzSm4YSfYYDUv7KoeONHl8xlrTYIcag==

And here's a link to my build with a video, if you're interested in seeing how I made up my electronics: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=140705

For anything else, you can do a search just in this thread if you're looking for something specific. If you search this thread for "Faceplate" you'll still have quite a few pages if results, but it should be much more manageable. Alternatively, you can look up some of those materials that PeterLC mentioned. Also, some brass ones turn up in the junkyard from time to time.

Hope this helps,

-Shawn

Thanks! I love how everyone is so helpful here. :) I'm not sure what to use for the screen though...but I'll think of something.
