Farnsworth Discussion

altoid tins are about half the size you're looking for. Would be good for kids variants. in fact, I plan on making a pair for the kids, using such tins.

The limited run QMx Xmas decoration Farnsworth is made in an Altoids tin I think. The overall quality of the thing though is rather disappointing given the price.

I know it's out of scale, but would an Altoids tin work, or is it too small?

Altoids tin is very small compared to a full sized Farnsworth. But, the one that Leena had is around the size of one, possibly a little bigger. Getting good photos of that one is rough though.

I like the idea of the Altoids sized ones (I know some very geeky children who might get a kick out of one). Has anyone worked up a parts list, better yet made a run of faceplates, for that size?

I don't imagine that someone would bother doing a run of tiny faceplates unless there was a good number of people wanting one. I made a custom mini-Farnsworth type thing in a cigarette case and just made the faceplate from some sheet brass. It was a bit tedious doing it will a drill and a Dremel and files but it came out OK and it was just a one-off. Finding tiny versions of the knobs and red lens might also be an issue if you want any sort of accuracy scaled down.

I wasn't going for a scaled down copy but something based on a Farnsworth so I made almost everything. I have considered getting the 3.5" Wheatley box and having a go at a roughly half scale one.

I found some nice tiny Russian radio valves to use inside the Claudia Farnsworth if I ever find the other parts needed to make one. I have the boxes but the faceplate will need to be custom made of course and that damned dialplate and knob is proving hard to find.

I found this

i just now realized how small an Altoids tin is...is there anything between the size of the Altoids tin and the actual Farnsworth?

I have a pretty decent little Farnsworth made out of an Altoids tin.It even plays the buzzing sound when you push the middle button and the red light blinks! :love
