Factory Entertainment Star Trek: The Next Generation Dustbuster phaser

You know - That price really puts Wands pricing on the tricorder in perspective.

Just saw the price for this. Woah! Good thing I already decided I was going to pass on this one. Guess I better start saving in case they do more TNG props that I actually want to get.

I love this phaser, but this is a lot of money and I don't think theirs looks that great. I need to finish the kit I have I guess (I designed Arduino based electronics for it... no sound though).

Good thing I never liked this version but I do hope they do the others.
Same. I generally love TNG props, but the Dustbuster is not my favorite and $500 is a tough pill to swallow given my tepid interest in it...

But I am concerned that poor sales of this might deter them from making more TNG props, although I would propose that the cobra head phaser and later-era tricorder would sell like hot cakes!

I have to confess I"m conflicted on this one. I'm really tempted but I'd take a beating with the exchange rate and duties.

Probably a bad move on their part to come out of the “big phaser” gate with a Dustbuster offering vs. a Cobrahead or Boomerang.

The Dustbuster has its fans, but it would be a comparatively smaller group that would be willing to shell out $500 for it.

If they fail to stick the landing with the Dustbuster, it’s more likely that the better selling models may never see the light of day.

Now that I think about it, $500 isn't really too bad considering how much the MR cost back in the early 2000's, I think I paid $399 for mine. Since I don't like this design I won't be buying it. If/when they come out with the Cobrahead, Boomerang and Dolphin Phasers I will be all over them even at the same price.

Gents in this economy $500 is the new $250. Your forgetting the presentation box as well but I will check the measurements before I decide with the Rod unit I have to see if it is close. The hypo spray was way undersized but the Crickets with the electronics were pretty good after the presentation box snafu was resolved.

Well, let’s address the elephant in the room and talk about accuracy.

From what is being presented, this Dustbuster is very “toy-like” in its presentation vs. “prop-accurate”. The buttons appear to be the wrong shape/size (especially the trigger button), the force setting indicator is not accurate in appearance (it should be a segmented LED bar graph), there are visible seam lines not seen in the original prop, and the color of the main body does not appear to match gloss dove gray with a light silver misting over the top.

This does not appear to approach Master Replicas quality, in terms of a mass produced prop that, though idealized, would still present itself as overall being accurate on the main details.

What it appears to be…

…vs. what it should look like (a very accurate build-up of the HMS kit):

Regarding the sizing, Barry Eldridge from FE posted this as a comment on this Facebook post:

"I’m the guy who’s responsible for project management on our Star Trek replicas and let me assure you your voice does matter, to me at least. We put thought care and planning into every one of our pieces and I am a fan, I’m not just a corporate peon (well only on Tuesdays).
The Dustbuster was copied directly from a surviving OP [original prop], while that OP was fairly beaten up it hadn’t shrunk, so the size is 100% correct, and unlike many other OP’s all the Dustbusters appear to have been the same size, probably because they really didn’t make that many of them and they had limited screen lives. For other OP’s there is often no definitive single prop, rather a selection, often with a lot of variables between them, size included.
Trust me I scratched my head when I saw OP hypos ranging in size by as much as 2” either way. In this case we usually try and go for something we feel is a good hybrid of them all and somewhere In the middle. That was the case with the Hypo. I stand by my choices and I’ve seen our replica hypo in Gates McFadden’s lovely hand and it looked pretty darn right to me.
Of course if people don’t agree with the choices we make I’m totally ok with that and I’m sorry I didn’t hit the bullseye for them. But I’m always listening and will always try to do the best I can. Hopefully I only selectively disappoint some people some of the time."

It was not just the size of the tube as it was the size of the hypo unit itself which was very undersized.

I was surprised at its size when it arrived too, certainly smaller than I expected - though he seems to mean he personally saw multiple different sizes of original hypos?

He's just trying to underplay the huge blunder that they made.
Thank you, Barry. Now I will NEVER buy another thing from you, you jerk!

Bit of a sale if that helps. I'm still deciding. It's not may favorite but I am full of regret for not getting the First Contact phaser from MR back in the day.
