Envy Thread: Mal's Pistol from Firefly

Phil - if you don't mind me asking some dumb questions, I have a fairly accurate resin one of these on its way here and I'd like to spruce it up. Anyway, with the base gun out of the way, do you know what type of wood was used for the grips? I have zero knowledge of wood types, so ....

Secondly, are the "thumbswitches" on the sides a found part or fabricated like the panels?

Lastly - seems like he "******" something int he show. Is the "hammer" on the gun functional and/or attached to the taurus hammer?

Woah - and NICE money, too.

Just through a quick google search, I found this:

taurus65lauf102mm1tp.jpg

This is what I'm currently using to base my pistols on.

And here's a pic from the site of the prop company that made the pistol for the show(the site address escapes me at the moment):

Nice foosh gun muzzle flash on the right of the pic there. :)

Awesome gun :) Damn impressive...

Tell us about the money.

The money is "real."

Phil

Everything in the photos (except the gun) is screen-used.

Correction: I think one or two items might not be screen-used, but are based on screen-used items.

The paper money and metal cards at the bottom of the image are screen-used for sure.

Phil

So what are the metal cards? Are they metal playing cards?

And what's the paper money? Completely fictional, a replica of real currency, or real money?

It's my understanding that the metal cards are playing cards.

The money is completely fictional, and was developed as a rush job for the production. It's printed on thin Mylar, so it's transparent and very cool.

Phil...thanks for the awesome thread - especially the "parts on a mat" photo. Nice background. ;)

Anyway, I got the base pieces cut out last night, though I've got to get the right size curved router bit to do the top edge, but I'm wondering how thick the side panels are. I'm using a bulldog as the base gun (what? I've already got the parts) and so I've got the main gun thickness as 5/8". I'm guessing then that the panels are 1/2" thick? The few screencaps I've got make them look about as wide as the gun itself, but they're not very good angles. Wondering if you're allowed to shed some light on that subject.

Oh, and a couple of days before you posted this thread I bought a resin one off a boardmember. Guess i'll have stunt and hero versions. Woo.

I wish I could help you, but I don't have any of the parts seen in the photos above. Furthermore, I don't own any versions of the Firefly gun or guns from which I could take measurements.

When I got the parts together for the project shown above, I acted as a commission-less middleman. My reward was to feel the excitement of the builder's (my friend's) voice when he finally completed one of his Holy Grail projects.

I've handled quite a few Firefly/Serenity props, but they've come and gone exclusively to my friend, who is a fanatic for the show and film.

By the way, Craig Kovach was not the builder of this prop, as many have speculated.

Thanks for sharing the info on this awesome prop Phil. Since it might be the only way to ever own one - here's my pleading with SIDESHOW ----> Make this gun. Oh, and make two versions - "Firefly" TV version and the "Serenity" movie version. Me wants it.. ;)

Well, thanks for all the information and the cool photos. PM sent.

Only marginally related to the thread, but I thought I'd post anyway. We do have a boardmember who makes these, and if he wants to come foreward...I ordered this a couple of days before Phil started this thread.

Anyway, this is his scratchbuilt version. Incredibly accurate given he was only working from screencaps. I did a small amount of "accurizing", but not much. I did hollow it out and put in a real trigger guard.

I painted it last night inspired by Phil's pics. The colors won't show up with my camera. The metal has a faint blue hue to it, and the pistol grips are a chocolate brown.
