EFX Mark IX Science tricorder

got mine a couple of weeks ago, still boxed up though as nowhere to display it yet. Incredible piece though.. heavy! Looks great all lit up (although for me, a shame you can see the individual small LED's inside as you never could on the shows/films) Also the red light on the top left seems to light up the graphics sheet beyond the whole that its supposed to. Are the holes cut out of alignment or something maybe?

Renaissamce man - sorry, dont know the answer to any of your questions. I'd be interested to hear about it if you managed to add some diffusion.

I'm debating buying one of these Tricorders.
I have two questions.

1. Is it possible to get in between the electronics and the body so I can add some additional diffusion sheet, I'll likely use some thin mylar or styrene paper thin to give some extra diffusion to the LEDs.

2. How long does the light and sound cycle run for once open?

Thanks

1. No, you would void the warranty and if something happens to your tricorder, eFX won't repair it. Besides, it would lower the collector's value....

2. 2 min. timer inside, then it automatically shuts down and you can display it on the stand.

Mine has a place on my desk next to the telephone....

I'm not too bothered about the possibility of re-sale, so long as I could diffuse the LED's a bit better, I'd be happy. Besides any changes I made wouldn't be permanent. I would simply want to slip in some better diffusion material.
I just need to know if it would be theoretically possible?
Thanks

Since no one has done it before, I can't tell with certainty that it will work or will not work. The question would be, where you would put the diffusion sheets?
Because only the main screen seems to be diffused on certain parts. Like the yellow bars on the Starfleet Data R-8863 and the red exponential graph points. The diffusion sheet seems to be fused with the print. The rest are undiffused as Bryan said.

Thanks for the information Kertzratz.
Diffusion of the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta LEDs and the few LEDs above along the top face are the only ammendments I would want to make.

Cool! I am so tempted to open up mine but...... I am scared if I botch it up. It happens a lot when the price of anything I touch reaches more than 3 figures :lol

I'd say, don't do it... but I'm also temped to change the tricorder sound, cause it's slightly lower than what you can here on tv or have in the trek games, though it's from the sound library.

Finally got mine! This is a cool prop (although I did think it was overpriced, but oh well!)

The build is really good, VERY heavy.
There is a small scratch (quite deep) on the front of the casing but it does'nt destract me too much. There was also some marks to the front LCARS screen that are just about showing up in the photos. All small niggles that I'm not too bothered about. I am worried that the decal seems to be coming away from the body at the top right (above the "I" "E") although I have seen this on a few other EFX tricorder pix so I'm presuming its inherent in the make up of the product? Any one else noticed this?

Make use of the warranty or just call Bryan to handle the repair, if you like....

Got the same gap on mine, but it doesn't seem to come off, so as long as you don't tug on it, I guess it stays on forever. Even pushing it on to the body isn't working...

I agree on both points and they are great when it comes to returns for problems.

Yeah thats Sir Patrick Stewarts auto a few days before he was Knighted.

I'm sure the customer service with EFX is brilliant but I think I can cope with the little scratch! The paint job looks good enough so as not to peel or bubble in the future and I don't fancy sending the thing all the way back to the US from England.

A damn good piece but I can't understand why this wasnt made as a rechargable? Lets hope AAA batteries are around for a good number of years, Lol. Also think they could have included the clear case for the price! At a combined price they come to £390 over here, thats about $564 at current exchange.

I agree about the case, but they don't include cases for any of their products to keep the price down. But, if you have an MR Communicator, the case is exactly the same and will fit perfectly over the Tricorder. I have both covers and they are identical.

Finally picked up mine today, many thanks to Fusednova for a straightforward and pleasurable transaction.

Mine has a new niggles, along the same lines as mentioned above, Minor blemishes on the inside, residue on the chassis above the I/E decals and scratch marks on the LCARS graphics, presumably where the factory worker applied pressure to attach the decal.

Does anyone have any comment on the sound quality? Mine sounds a little sick, maybe I was expecting too much and I realise the speaker is behind plastic but it sounds muffled and a bit rough. This was with a brand new set of AAA's so it's not battery related.

Overall I'm very pleased to have secured one, EFX have done a great job on packaging and presentation.

I think that is about normal for the sound quality. Mine is not too loud either compared with other Mark IX's and Mark X's I have, but those don't have as much blocking the speaker as the EFX does.

Hmm, it seems like all of them have that sound. It always sounded to me like the quality of those re recordable sound modules, like they took it from youtube or something... But its still neat. I still love mine! Congratulations on getting one! Hopefully the imperfections dont take too much away from it.

Nope, I can live with the imperfections, it was like Christmas and I was 5 years old again when I got the box home!

Really looking forward to seeing what EFX fire out next with the Trek licence:cool
