eFX Darth Maul Legend Signature Lightsaber Review

I came home from work yesterday to find this on my office chair. Had fun trying to explain it to my girlfriend who thought I was "over" Star Wars props (admittedly, that was my quote). I pre-ordered it from Redford Films and it was a surprise to receive it considering I never got a shipping notification. I also have to give eFX credit for shipping them on time. They quoted October, 2013. I received it on October 31st but hey, it was still October.

The box is quite large. The shipping weight is 22 pounds. I got number 223 of 500.

Under a piece of plain cardboard and a piece of styrofoam, you're greeted by a classy looking gloss black diagram. But that's NOT a box. It's just a piece of cardboard.

Underneath that is the eFX envelope, brown cardboard box, bottom base, and lightsaber in a black display box. All wrapped in tissue paper.

Inside the envelope is the plaque, some stickers, return policy, and a little booklet with pictures of Ray Park signing the plaque and one of Darth Maul plus some info on the history of the prop.

The stand is not mirrored like MR, it's actually a piece of brushed aluminum underneath a clear piece of plastic. Be careful removing the protective tape from the top piece of plastic since I discovered it's not very rigid and bows when you pull the tape off. The stand is the normal eFX aluminum stand with the Luke ROTJ style adjustable brackets.

The prop itself is nice and heavy. It's definitely not a "hero" and if you are used to pristine replicas, it might bug you. From a distance, it's fine but up close, it's quite ugly.

It does have a covertec knob, real O-rings, and metal emitters.

Again, if you have OCD or are a stickler for perfection, this is not the prop you want. The buttons are uneven.

The one area I'm not a fan of is the emitters. The weathering they used is brown, not black, not gray. Brown. I might have to fix that on my own.

I'm not going to display it until I can get a cover made. The base should accommodate a cover just fine.

What I like:
- The presentation: Once I get a cover, it will look awesome. The stand that came with the MR Maul was shorter than the prop itself so you had to put the whole thing into a case, this just needs a cover.
- The weight: It's heavy. I could easily knock someone out with it and I don't think I would even damage it.
- The idea: This is the first officially licensed replica cast off an original. I think that's pretty cool.
- The screws that hold the base together: They have the eFx logo stamped into them.
- My number: My favorite numbers are 22 (Will Clark's number as a San Francisco Giant) and 23 (Michael Jordan's number). I got 223. :D

What I don't like:
- The base. QC wasn't great so there is dust and debris between the brushed aluminum and clear piece so I'll have to unscrew it to dust clean it off. My clear piece also had a few nicks in it so I'll debate going to my local plastic shop and having a new one cut.
- The stand: The stand is aluminum and they didn't put anything on the bottom so when you put it on the base, it's aluminum directly on plastic. It WILL scratch.
- The weather on the emitters. What kind of substance did they use that left them brown??

Overall, I'm quite happy. :thumbsup

Great review! thanks, it made me clear my mind of questions about this prop and made me decide not to buy a resale on ebay. It looks different from the promo shots shown a while ago.

Great review. I have to agree about the emitters... I don't like the weathering on them at all. Mine are not brown though, they are more red-ish. Blah! So I had the same idea of just redoing them myself.

Other than the emitters (which is really not that bad, and an easy fix), I LOVE THIS SABER!!!

BTW, Is your Covertec knob off-center? With respect to the knobs on the other side? Mine is not 180 degrees behind the buttons.

Got mine too and agreed on all counts.

I need to go back and look at Gino's thread... I want to say the paint isn't what I expected... but I could be off on memory

Nice piece! I seem to remember that the emitter pieces on all the sabers (though just the top on the Obi/Qui sabers) were steel. So I'd guess that brown would be right, but if they haven't made it look realistically like rust, then it might look a bit odd.

Congrats on this great piece and the fact that eFX shipped it out on time! Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks for the review!

If you get a new piece of acrylic cut please let us know where you get it done. I'm having a hard time finding a place to cut a replacement piece for my eFX Vader Legend helmet stand. The holes have to be exact, and all my local shops can't seem to do it...:behave

was looking at reference photos in Gino's thread, and it looks like the metal ends on the real props are pretty ugly and brown too.

Just need higher res shots.

Finally opened mine and took a good look at it. I like it, don't mind some of the things you guys pointed out. It really looks and feels like a screen-used prop. I wish the stand had a way of screwing onto the base though, but other than that no major complaints. The o-rings seem a bit delicate though, hopefully they hold up over time.

I found somewhere a comparison of this one (eFX) against the Master Replicas version. This one is longer than the MR, and looking closely to the pic published by eFX of the original prop besides this one, the replica seems to be longer than the screen-used prop as well. Is this just me or is it really longer than the screen-used prop? (I know many people don't mind these small details, but I do, specially when thinking about buying a replica that is supposed to be an exact and faithful copy of a screen-used prop).

It's just the depth perception. The one in front seems longer, because of the angle and it's closer to the camera.

So then, is the MR version shorter than the screen used prop? The real point to all this is that I'm not sure if keeping my MR prop or selling it and getting this eFX! :D I need advice on which one is cooler.

having had/have both plus the orbital machining one... the EFX. The MR is nice though for sure, but the EFX being cast from the real deal means it's the most accurate.
