ED-209 (full scale) Costume/Statue

Do you have a front view plan for how your human body will fit inside the ED-209 shape? I can't quite figure how much of your legs will be exposed or how wide of a stance it's going to require.

As soon as I saw the side view on DarthVader1's Facebook page, I said "Bad idea. What if the convention center has stairs?"

But joking aside, I have some real concerns about how dangerous it will be to walk in this thing. Stilt walking with the extensions straight down from your hips is all well and good, but the distance between ED's very large feet will be forcing you into a very wide stance the way I'm picturing it.

Either a smaller scale might have been better, like the one shown by Pannaus Props, or forget trying to make it wearable and just focus on it as a statue. Because with your feet up off the ground, and your upper body completely encased, if you make a misstep you're going over. Hard.

This is excellent craftsmanship and an admirable creation, but it's not worth hurting yourself over.

Alex

Thanks for asking, I understand your concern. Should've posted the front view earlier. As you can see my feet are attached to the sides of the legs using "stirrups" and the inner berth is roughly 2 feet, with the space between my feet around 15 inches; so not too far apart. The actual stirrups will be a bit more practical looking than the picture and ED's feet will be quite sturdy and strong, especially the toes under my feet. To make it a statue, bolts are inserted at key points to keep it locked in place, the stirrups are removed and the decal plates and missing waist piece are replaced. Not saying it will be easy with the weight of the upper torso, but I work a heavy-lift job which keeps me pretty strong; so no worries. :]

Well here we go again with another update, hopefully expect one last update before I head off to florida for two weeks. The chin's intake struts are glued and dried and the roof of the mouth is now in place. The small box attached to it is a conduit for the many wires that populate his mouth. Two more things to do before this front section is done and ready for some smooooth-cast.

AWESOME!! What material are you using?

Thanks, I am using primarily posterboard (with a waxy surface) and matboard. The inside and outside will then be coated with smooth-cast 320. :]

oh man. just stumbled onto this. Robocop is one of my all time favorite movies, and I would LOVE to see ED-209 there in full glory! Have you seen how they are selling SDCC badges though? Kind of has me worried. Ill be there, if I can get a badge, hopefully you can make it. I would LOVE to see that puppy live!

Well here we are, with my last picture update until February; after I return from the southern peninsula. Though I can still respond to comments. It's sad that I have to abandon my work for so long, but I'm visiting family, so it's worth it. The tabs in the back were about the last piece of the fore section to need doing, aside from the bolts I have to make for it. Gotta find a circular saw to cut the cardboard tubes though, the dremel and hand saw couldn't "cut" "it" (ahahaha) Anyway enjoy what I have thus far and look forward to more progress in the coming months. Also thank you to everyone's support and enthusiasm as I clumsily thump along building this beautiful machine. :[ ]

I'm back on the grind again, fresh from vacation. Working on the shoulders at the moment and they're really putting things in perspective. I was worried about the scale of it, but holding the shoulder to the front section showed just how massive it will be. (that's a relief) Though it looks bigger in real life than in a picture. Hopefully i'll have a bit more to show in a few days.

Looks huge to me! And gorgeous!

You're really creating some nice forms with the plastic sheeting. Subtle stuff.

Safe to say I slightly underestimated how large a mass the upper body will be. Thanks, it's actually just poster board and matte board though. Probably will go with plastic or metal sheets for my next project. :]

Not really an ED update, though I did just get this cool 10" NECA figure, which will help with some of the scaling and details. Plus I just saw the new Robocop and it really was a good movie. Better than I expected and certainly better than some reviews I've seen. Not saying it trumps the original, but on it's own a very good re-imagining.

Now we're getting somewhere; the shape is coming in and I now know exactly how much room I have inside this behemoth. Although work is not progressing as fast as I would like, at least not to where i'll be able to finish by April. So I'm gonna have to speed things up a little to meet my deadline. Anywhoo, you'll see below the shoulders, which are not yet attached to the face, already show the outline for the dome (I helped it a little). Over the next week I will be working to attach the shoulder flaps and to get as much of the rear of the head done as is possible.
please enjoy.

I guess the threat of not having enough time to finish before work starts back up, has put me in a mood to actually work on ED. Took about 4 hours to draw out the piece in the first pic, it's mainly one piece, like pepakura. Still have to add a bit more before I glue them together, this way they will set straight. Thankfully it too is properly to scale and after measuring what I have of the head, it is exactly the same length and width of my table. 42x70 inches. Funny how some things work out. You'll notice I'm starting to use my ED figure as reference, that is because it is actually quite accurate, more so than the Hot Toys version and it only cost 60. Some angles you can't quite see in pictures online or in the movies, so I fill it in with what I know and what is on the model. I should be onto the gun pods by the beginning of March, so stay tuned. :}
