Limited Run Droid Caller - Precision Machined Kit

Very nice MJF. What brand of paint did you use and what is the name/color?

I used the same one scottjua recommended (want to give credit where credit is due).

This is the wrinkle paint I used.

Worked super well, and was very easy to do. Just follow the instructions pretty much. I always bake my paints, as I suck at having real patience. It actually says you can bake it to cure it too on the can, so I did my normal procedure and voila. Turned out fantastic.

I have a superb resin casting of an accurate Kobold and the wrinkle finish matches perfectly.

Flat Black. I think this is in stock in many automotive retail store. I got mine at Auto Zone.

Hey, I'm pretty new to this sort of thing and I just received and assembled my caller! I have just a couple questions. First, what is the best way to file down sharp edges? Second, what is the best way to paint the gloss black? Spray paint? Brush?

I'm no expert and there are many methods which give good results. Try wrapping a piece of wet or dry 600 grit around a suitably shaped stick to take off the rough edges. A needle file is a good thing to have around as well and can remove a lot of material. I always spray my paint unless I have a very small piece such as the red dot on this caller.

Good luck and good building.

Just can't believe how precisely this fitted all together from the tiny ball bearings to the larger parts. It's like it was all pre fit to be SO exact! Once again I'm boggled by the workmanship, updates, feedback and response by Dave and look forward to his next venture on here!

I just completed mine - it is really nice, Dave. Thank you for doing this run. I would post a pic, but it looks a lot like all the others; Beautiful!

My crinkle paint turned out amazing. My gloss paint chipped as I removed the masking tape. I used an engine enamel and prepped similar to the crinkle paint. Is enamel the wrong choice versus a regular gloss black?

Hey there,

will start with assembling this week and started to think about electronic inside.
Any suggestions about the buzzer / piezzo buzzer? Would be great if anybody could give some advice for one with near the right sound compared to the sound of Luke's Droid Caller from ANH.

The kit looks awesome as anybody here allready said ;)

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has an idea on an electronics set up too.

..also part of my wrinkle paint won't wrinkle ! Sanded it back and tried again a few times, I don't get it? Any way I will post pics of mine once I'm finished weathering it :)

Thanks

SANDING? That's a lot of work... put it in a ziplock bag, pour some paint stripper on that sucker and two minutes later wipe it down. Bam... dry and re-paint... definitely follow the paint instructions and bake it.

Good Idea thanks Scott :)

Thought I'd post some pics. Everyone has got some great looking droid callers! My wrinkle paint turned out great, I'm really happy with it. However my gloss enamel chipped when I removed the masking tape and again when I tried to clear out the contact pin holes. Overall I don't think it is a horrible look, particularly if they are supposed to show some wear and tear. I'll probably think about repainting the gloss portion with something other than an enamel. It just seems too brittle.

Hi all
Has anyone tried a liquid latex or white crayon
Then using the kobold sicker the kit came with as a stencil
Then using the wrinkle paint ?
Just a thought. ......
