Dredd 2012 Lawgiver 3d print (YES! ANOTHER ONE!)

Someone pinch me now, I'm dreaming! That is sick!! I need to buy this ASAP! Excellent work, your design is flawless :)

:cheers oh yes that's the boy. buy, buy buy.

Well done, superb work. No time for sleep more info please :lol
(Oh and the link please)

Ok, here's some info as promised.

The Good:
It turned out just as I hoped... the details are crisp, straight... almost flawless. There ARE some light print lines that I need to smooth out (visible in the photos). It fit perfectly right over the Glock. Even the grip cover turned out good- better than I expected.

The bad:
The material I chose is a LOT more fragile than I had counted on. I pushed the limit a bit too far i think, having lot a of surface area at only 0.7mm thick, which is close to the tolerance of 0.5mm. The back end of the body is slightly warped due to it being a very long and thin- I will "bend" this in-place and epoxy the inside so that it will keep its shape. Part of the rear slide has a small crack in it, which is easily fixed, but I will need to go through the shell and add support somehow. Also, I managed to snap the hook/catch of the magazine- easily fixed as well, but it highlights how fragile this stuff is. This first copy will NOT be a LG suitable for trooping, that's for sure. It needs to be reprinted into something stronger (see below).

The even more bad:
Unfortunately, Sh*pew*ys flagged my print as "suspiciously weapon-like", which is something I was REALLY worried about from the onset. They refused to send it until I gave them an explanation. So, in desperation, I actually changed the design to accommodate Dutch law and their rules. In true prop-building tradition, I re-purposed the the model into something completely different- a Scifi WELDING TORCH that I can use in a scifi film idea I've been toying with for a while. I even went back and modeled new pieces for it:

Obviously, this creates a problem with letting others order them, even if the model now definitely is NOT a weapon and therefore conforms to their rules. I am trying to work out a solution, albeit an expensive one (likely up to $300) and if anyone still thinks it's worth it can contact me and I can explain more via PM and then decide whether or not to post in the JY about it. I'm also looking into using another printing place- the problem is that I have found only ONE that can handle my models for some reason.

Moving on:
I have concluded that future prints of this model need to be done in the "Strong Flexible" nylon plastic. Yes, this means more cleanup (spraying it with heavy filler-primer) BUT it will cost less and be MUCH more durable. I may actually have found a place in France (Sculpteo) that offers this material as an alternative if I can't have more done at Sw. This might necessitate some mods to thicken the walls though, because Sculpteo have a minimum of 0.8mm whereas Sw have 0.7, and my model is made with 0.7 in mind.

That is the funniest thing I saw all day! There aren't any Dredd fans at Shapeways, I take it.

Doesn't really matter in my opinion. I'm printing an industrial prop (I actually AM kinda working on a scifi short) for my movie borrowing design aesthetics from other films. therefore, conforming to their rules and laws.

Some GREAT news guys. Check the JY. There's a little interest thread there that I just started... might be worth checking out.

Looks like I will be partnering up with one of THE best resin casters on the RPF to bring castings of my Lawgiver to the world as a solid resin kit. We're planning on having the magazine separate, possibly held in place with magnets, with a separate serial number plate for those that want to engrave their own. I myself need at least another 2-3 of these to troop with and with the big costume and FB threads going, making them solid "finished" castings seemed like the way to go.

This thread will keep focus on building my "hero" Lawgiver. I'll be updating again soon with some progress photos! (I'm actually still waiting on a couple small parts.)

Thought y'all might like some updated photos. I threw on a coat of primer. certainly makes it easier to see all the details and any surface imperfections that might need smoothing. Note that nothing has been adjusted or glued down- these are all loose, straight-from-printing. Still waiting on a couple more parts.
