Dredd 2012 Lawgiver 3d print (YES! ANOTHER ONE!)

Darn that grip cover! :facepalm My shoulder is aching from modeling all day. I'm just not happy with it yet as I can't get the geometry to cooperate. But I'll get there.

Here are some screengrabs showing the evolution of the grip cover.

Once the grip is done, all I have left are the sights and then a final pass to tighten things up and check tolerance for printing.

Here is an inside shot of how the Glock attaches- note the spacers that fit in the accessory rail. Also, note the space allowing the slide to move freely. I have also modeled in spaces between plates to make the cover look like it was assembled from several pieces, to cut down on that "cast plastic" look. (basically, the main body will LOOK like a multi-part kit but print as one-piece. The rear slide, mag and grip will still be separate of course.)

OK, not the most exciting thing to see perhaps, but here is a shot showing how I'm hollowing out and removing excess material inside to cut down on the print cost. Lots of thin beams going back and forth will hopefully help the model retain strength despite the thin walls. Also, the inside can be strengthened by adding styrene sheet (or even metal plates) if needed.

Oh... and I just decided to change something since I'm getting a few requests for a copy of the print. I'm removing the serial number plaque from the main body and making it separate. First, it will allow me to print it in the material called "frosted ultra detail". More importantly, I can make custom serial numbers!

Superb again. Really good work here and nice to see it progressing quickly. (i'll have my lawgiver soon :lol) Many thanks for the on the material. Frosted Detail id definitely the way to go

Been working on a feasibility study on the display. 4mm acrylic sheet I had lying about the house (as we all do), painted the back black and using an engraving tool marked the design through the the paint and into the acrylic. Side lit with blue LED. (Apologies for poor quality, I did it quickly by hand on a wobbley workmate, also for the photography, 1 hand a full stretch while trying to keep the light turned on with the other).

Brilliant! I think you've just saved a lot of people a lot of frustration!

Awesome work. Having missed one of the other offerings I'd like to get in on this. Especially since it will slow for a moving trigger

Ok, I pushed like a madman during the weekend and she's just about done! During the push I actually found more details that I had not seen before. One of the hard things has been deciding which details to go by because they change between versions. So far I have probably seen 3-4 variants of the gun. But when you look at the movie you only have a couple sharp frames here and there to go by. So it's hard to settle on making either a pure stunt or hero. This is probably kind of a mishmash of them all but I'm fine with that.

I want to do a few tweaks and one final check of the mesh tonight before I order a test print. It's a very expensive print and i don't want to risk having to redo it! A print takes about 10 days.

If the test print is good I'll set up links to order directly from my Shapeways shop for those that want them and post a thread in the JY. My current estimate has it at $275 for the bells-and-whistles "frosted detail" print and $177 for White Strong Flexible. Both come with a standard Dredd "frosted ultra detail" serial number plaque. For those that want a custom serial number, it might actually be cheaper getting one engraved locally- it's a fair amount of work cleaning the mesh after adding the text (since it's a negative cutout) and I don't have a lot of spare time these days, so I'd need 30-ish to do them.

That is damn impressive mate. I look forward to its release. The detail is fantastic. Love the work mate. Keep it up.

Brillant work. I also can wait to see the end results. I bet it's going to be a long 10 days :), but judging by what you've done so far, it will be well worth it. Stating the obvious here, but wouldn't mind a picture in it's raw state when it lands.

Have you had any thought on the display screen? How much room is there to play with in the thickness of the material? Are you leaving a 'hole' if people want to try to fit something or have you got a cunning plan :love

I'll absolutely post photos when the parts arrive. Count on it!

The displays screen is currently cut out- empty. Something will have to be added there. I supposed that I COULD print up a static "screen" in transparent material, with letters "engraved" from the inside, that would work just like TR66's test, except that you'd have to "roll" on paint so that it doesn't fill in the lettering. There's about 3-4mm of space for a screen I think.

Forgive me if this is an dumb question but is there a pep file for this out could this be turned into one?

Well, with heavy modification I suppose it might be turned into a pep file, but not as it is. (Also, take into account that the panels on this are 0.7-1.5mm thick. It would be easier to just draw templates on cardboard than to try and fold it together.

That's true... I was planning on doing that if i couldn't find a pep... might try thin cardboard off the back of a note pad

Just wanted to say that I have ordered a print. Also, I made an additional plaque insert for the ammo counter/ID screen- hopefully it will work like I intend and you will be able to back-light it.

And so the wait begins. At least the film is out on Monday in the UK.
Thanks for doing this, look forward to end results :)
