DR Who-Sonic Design Competition (winners announced)

So here's a question:

Those of us who will be working in 3D/CAD software, should we add dimension lines to our beauty renders for the sake of including size in the judging, or is it understood that a 3D model comes equipped with all of the dimensions, and the winner must supply the entire file set at the end of the contest?

Seems nitpicky, I know, but as it's already come up, some clarification would be nice. ;)

To be fair to people drawing who will have to include it in their pictures I would say yes, you have to include the minimum 4 dimensions in your drawing. How you display them is totally up to you.

Of course you can send all the dimensions to Rassilon if you win though. :)

As my new screwdriver is under construction already, I will have to forgo the competition but will post a jpeg for the amusement of all.

Looks great! A nice evolution of the current sonic. :)

Even though you're already building one there's nothing holding you back from submitting a new one in the contest!

A little clarification on what we're looking for... In a word, it's creativity! When you post your picture please feel free to explain your design. Sell it to the judges! A hand drawn design with a great explanation of what led you to it or how it's operated could easily defeat a highly polished 3D rendering with no explanation. I've been told that if you want to give your dimensions in your explanation that will cover that requirement.

However, if you'd like to put them in your image that's great too. Here are a couple DEAD SIMPLE examples of how that could be done:

I'm sure you guys will come up with more creative ways to illustrate that. Feel free to make your images as elaborate or as simple as you like!

Enjoy!

This design combines the Art Deco lines of classic science fiction with the look of the 2nd Doctor's recorder and a Dalek eye stalk. These are items in the Doctor's universe that he is well acquainted with and would have to draw design inspiration from.

That is gorgeous :thumbsup

Force Commander, your description really adds to your design! I see all of that in there, great job! Looking forward to more entries!

Previous contests have been judged by the general membership. In those cases bias was certainly a great concern. As this is a judged competition the risk of that is much lower. Rassilon as well as all of the three judges have been asked to keep their participation in the thread to a minimum to help avoid such accusations which is why I'm administrating.

If any judge or myself suspect that an entrant is trying to coerce a judge they will be removed from the contest. Don't do it folks!

Cool, thanks, wasn't worried personally as my arch enemies don't frequent the site. :lol

Just noticed it in the earlier comp while checking to make sure nobody had already done a sonic the way I have in mind.

Best I get drawing......

Alright here's my design.

Story: The 8th Doctor was on the planet Saurus IV when his Sonic Screwdriver was destroyed in a confrontation with the Sontarans. Taking the broken fragments of his sonic screwdriver he used the handle as the basis for constructing a new more advanced sonic screwdriver.

Design: My whole concept for designing this sonic screwdriver was to do a design that combined the classic sonic screwdriver with the 9th and 10th Doctor sonic screwdriver. It was meant to bridge the gap between the classic and new show. I took elements from both of them, but tried to make it look more primitive than the new series screwdriver. I also designed with the possibility of machining it in mind (with my mediocre skills).

the closest to 3d modeling i've come is drawinga cube on paper with pencil so please excuse the old school approach.

a miniaturised Dalekanium case, powered by a warp star and a 90 degree rotating halo, ideally the warp star would be lit

Old school works just fine! Love the Dalek touch, looks like something the Doctor would have mashed together whilst trapped on Skaro. :)
