Doctor Who opinions

I enjoyed it, but I had a few issues. Again with the plain wooden interior of the box of the Tardis, really makes the police box feel like a porch rather than the Tardis itself.

When Kevin pulled the gun on Yas and her mother. At that point they had no idea of the spider issue, she should have just left, as requested and called for back up. You pull an illegal firearm on a cop you'll have the place surrounded in minutes. You don't argue with the gunman, putting both yourself and mother at risk. Obviously they couldn't do that as it would have killed the rest of the plot. But it pulled me out of it a bit.

Bradley Walsh is absolutely knocking this out of the park. The moments when he was in the house coming to terms with his loss and grief were incredible. I can understand why he and Ryan would follow the Dr.

Which leads me back to Yas, her sister seemed to be a waste of space and there was no really mention made of her father's employment status. Her mother was just sacked, leaving her as potentially the only breadwinner in the house hold. She ups and leaves to follow the Dr, leaves them in a possibly tricky financial position. Factor in, that in the last 24 hours what her mother has just seen her go through, and she goes inexplicably missing, she is going to fear the worst. That a cop goes inexplicably missing will also cause a massive manhunt, there was no mention she resigned prior to leaving.

So now I'm looking at her thinking you just selfishly left your family and colleagues worried sick in search of adventure. They should have intimated somewhere near the end that she confided in the mother the reality of the situation.

She didn't even identify herself as a police officer, I don't think, which was dumb. That's the first thing any real cop would do. "I'm a police officer, put the gun away (or more likely give me the gun) and I won't arrest you." But as for Yas disappearing, if the Doctor can bring them back 30 minutes after they left once, that doesn't mean she can't do it again. Go off for some adventures, come back 5 minutes after you left. Nobody will know the difference.

The Doctor does have a time machine, Yas can go back to the exact time she left.

DOH!
Really, really should've thought of that, its right there!!!! I'll get me coat.

I stand by the gun thing though.

I think my biggest problem with Yas is that she doesn't act like a cop. She might not have much experience, but she's still presumably been through whatever academy they have in the UK and she doesn't actually seem like she thinks like a police officer. It's part of her backstory but that's it.

Despite the time machine the doctor has failed multiple times for various reasons to bring the person back 5 min later .

The old something happened and we can't cross your time line to death .

She should give a disclaimer they you got a 50% chance you will die or be trapped in an alternative universe or have some other tragedy befall you should you become a companion of the Doctor .

The Doctor to seven year old Amy Pond " I'll be right back in 5 min "

12 years later .

I didn't really have a problem with the gun because it was the body guard who pulled the gun and I'm guessing since he was a bodyguard he was probably licensed to carry the gun though since he is a rich hotel magnate he probably thinks he can do whatever he wants and usually gets away with it.

Not in the U.K. The only security licensed for firearms are the police and nuclear sites forces.
An armed body guard for a hotel owner wouldnt fly here, at all. High ranking diplomats or presidents would be an exception. But he wasnt.

Although he was a presidential hopeful, which might qualify him. I'm sure extremely wealthy or famous people also get those perks.

No, rich an famous cover the cost of over time for armed police usually.
He said he wasnt a politician and hadnt anounced his intent to run.
Our gun laws are super tight, perks dont exist.
Also, that chrome plated gun wasnt any kind of service issue pistol.

Thanks, I did not know that. I still think in the context of the story that he would have had an armed bodyguard, which he did, and that Yaz wouldn't even think twice about it. But that is just my opinion. Who knows, Chris Chibnal might have been as ignorant of UK guns laws as a lot of other people are. Don't forget Roger T Davies had Wilford have a pistol, which I highly doubt was legally registered, that he gave to 10 just because his story needed it.

Its just one of those things, when something happens thats within your knowledge base and you know its wrong it takes you out a bit. Like the military guys, they probably see all sorts in films thats way off.

I don't think Chibnall was too concerned about UK laws. He's writing a show about a being who travels around in a stolen time machine, and becomes different people every so often. And the way Noth's character was written, I don't think he's the least bit concerned about breaking the law for his own protection anyhow.

For me, I'm missing the tougher side of The Doctor, but it's only been a few episodes. I cringed a bit when she said "I'm so sorry this happened to you" to a giant spider. And also, on a previous episode when she said "Only idiots carry knives." I got a chuckle as well. That practically felt like propaganda! ;)

I do like Jodie as The Doctor. It should be interesting to see if they plan to harden up her personality in future episodes.

Not to mention the fact that The Doctor went off on the guy for killing a spider, telling him that they have a right to live. Then she fooled them all into going into the panic room and lock them in with each other to die a slow death of starvation or oxygen deprivation!

That's because they are propaganda.

That line pissed me off. I carry one for work and several /most of my coworkers do too.
In fact, many people in my trade carry knives of various types for work.. but I suppose that makes US idiots?
(I know they're talking about the tools that carry them to do harm on the streets of London but they need to make that explicit or they run the risk of sounding as stupid as they do)

Yes, I know. Hence the ;)

I carry a knife every day as well. Some times I even carry 2 (gasp). I also carry a gun, so no doubt The Doctor would think I'm an idiot. But I still love the show. He did like Captain Jack though. So . . .

I was not terribly surprised by the new more sensitive Doctor Who. Though I was hoping that Chibnall would bring a little more of that Torchwood/Broadchurch grit to the party, but maybe later on he will work that in. He can certainly write that stuff well.

The problem is, this is the BBC and you can't do that kind of thing on the BBC anymore. This is the company that has gender hiring quotas and is completely in bed with gender and racial identity politics. None of its shows will reflect anything other than that. It's exactly why people are going to think that Jodie got the job because of her gender, even if she didn't, because the BBC is pushing that kind of thing so strongly.

I loved what Doctor Who was. I do not like what it's become. It just gets worse and worse and worse with every iteration, which is why the ratings keep plummeting. The show just isn't good anymore and it's because of the politics. My wife, a massive Who fan, who even sat through the worst of the Moffat episodes when I had given up, says that all of the current series is absurdly underwhelming. Even the Rosa Parks episode. It's all preachy nonsense that isn't remotely fun to watch. And I think the BBC knows it's in trouble because they reduced the number of episodes from 13 to 10. In the U.S., Doctor Who is only getting a 0.3 share of the 18-49 audience. Even in the UK, every single episode drops in the ratings, they are 2.5 million fewer viewers for episode 4 than they had in episode 1. This is not going well.

My 19 year old daughter who at 14 was a self proclaimed Whovian, with all kinds of swag, won’t even watch it anymore. She gave up in it while we had to endure the horrors of Clara. She didn’t even bother with Bill, and has no interest in watching the 13th Doctor. She hasn’t watched past series 8.

Is she smarter than I am? She gave up on a show that she lost interest in because it became a weak veneer of what it once was. I think I’m only hanging on because of my childhood memories of Tom Baker after school on PBS!

I keep waiting for it to be good again, but it keeps not!

Pretty much for me, good Doctor Who ended when Matt Smith left the TARDIS. The scripts were stupid, but Matt’s wonderful acting at least made it a polished turd!
