Done / Completed Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Kits/Completed Units

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

I'm definitely interested. Can't wait to see the prototype.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Quick question, will we be able to choose what kind of retraction the sonic will have? For example, will we be able to choose a Pertwee style where the black bit on the top is covered by the sleeve or like a Baker where it protrudes above the sleeve.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

You'll be able to make both. ;)

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Interested in two Bakers please!

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

I'll be getting pictures from the machine shop soon! Keep an eye open!

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

yay!

I got some photos from the Machine shop, and should have photos of the prototypes within a week or so.

This shows two versions that I had made.
One with a thick activation ring, and one with the thin.
The thick one was really for my own interests, the thin one will be on the production models.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Any chance that we might see another run some time afterwards? For those of us who can't afford them all in one go? :)

It really depends on how much interest there is. If there is still a lot of interest after this run, I'll consider it.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

So I did a quick and dirty build and put it all together. I'd like to emphasize that this is not what the completed screwdrivers will look like. This is just a test fit Baker piece that I slapped some paint onto. I know that I forgot the tiny washer in between the black bullet and the halo; I simply haven't had the time to run out to Ace Hardware and snag some spare parts. The Halo ring on the prototype is also made of aluminum, but the one on the final versions they will be constructed out of brass.

Yes, that's a repainted 1/2" Alnico Magnet in use there.

If everybody likes how this is looking, I'll likely be asking for payments soon so that the run can begin.

If anybody has any advice or comments, please feel free to post, and I'll delay the run so that everything can be addressed.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Looks great! The only things I noticed (By looking at screen caps. I'm no expert) I think the magnet should be a bit longer, the cut on the bottom should be a bit thinner, and the emitter is extended a tiny bit too much from the halo. Also, the metal supports stick outside of the halo and I don't see that present on any caps (Not sure if that's due to the rushed nature of the build) and the emitter might be a bit small, but it's hard to tell without getting a direct on shot. Like I said, i'm no expert so if anyone disagrees or notices anything else feel free to chime in. Most of these are really minor gripes so I don't really see any reason to delay the run unless you're aiming for the most accurate sonic out there.

Is it possible that you can direct me to the screen caps that you've looked over so that I can check them over? I just used some scrap metal as placeholders for the Halo Supports because I misplaced the 2 that I got from the shop. (They are extremely small, I think they must have rolled off of my table at some point). I'm pretty sure I have the length of the magnet correct, as it follows my measurements from the appearances of the screwdriver that show the piece in well enough resolution for it to be measured. As for the channel in the lower grip, it varies in thickness between shots, which is probably due to the angle and lighting. If you have any other questions or comments, just post'em here.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Here's where I got most of my reference material (Not including the custom design on the top of the page): http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=2509

The six shots near the top with the sonic held horizontally shows off the cut rather well. (And appears to be consistent with the first shot)

And picture near the bottom with the four shots of the sonic held vertically (And the one picture above it) shows the size of the magnet pretty well (There actually looks to be a join between the magnet and an additional black piece. I think a user by the name of Straker did this sort of join for a custom job on one of his RussReps)

Throughout the pictures you can also kinda see that the emitter sticks a little bit less (I'd say a centimeter or so, but it's really hard to tell) and it looks to be a bit thicker than the model, but again, hard to tell from the images.

Other than that, you seem to have nailed it!

EDIT: Here are some really good imaged of the emitter. http://tardisbuilders.com/index.php?topic=3130.0;all

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Ok, I took a look at the screencaps, and I agree with the channel on the prototype being oversized, so I'll be toning that down by a millimeter or two after I take some measurements.

As for the Magnet, that seems to be one of later Halos that was used on the show. As you know, Tom Baker loved to abuse the screwdriver prop, and due to the fragile nature of the Halo, it was constantly fixed or replaced during his era. I've modeled mine so that it is an average of the early Baker and late Pertwee eras. As far as I know, the halo didn't change during the Pertwee era until the sonic was re-dressed with the magnet. Some time into the Baker era, the Magnet extension appeared. Now since this is a kit rather than a completed piece, the builder will have the choice of adding this extension through a washer or some other piece of 1/2" OD tubing if they so desire; its likely I'll simply end up including it in the kit as soon as I finalize my measurements.

Also, I don't think you've voiced your interest in this run yet, are you going to hop in before its too late?
