Done / Completed Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Kits/Completed Units

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

I've been interested in picking up metal versions of the classic sonic's I've just not yet figured out the best way to go. Also debated whether to wait a bit longer to pick up the sound versions which are a little pricier or the non for display purposes...hmmm

I saw the War Doctor's mentioned, out of curiosity would the 8th Doctor's in the similar classic style be possible?

If you are referring to the 8th doctor's sonic used in the 1996 film with a brass band. Its unlikely that I will be making that one for several reasons.
First of all, I already have the Russrep version from the recent run. As most people probably would have gotten one when possible, I don't think that there would be enough interest to make that happen. Also, that sonic has a completely different construction, and it functions differently than the classic sonics. I also don't have very much research material that I could build a model off of, as I am not willing to re-cast Russ' version and I dong't own the pewter version that the screen-used prop was based off of.

Nice! Interested. Will there be room for sound? Unless I looked over that part.

Theoretically, there should be room for sound. The area where all the electronics would be in would be slightly cramped, but application of the electronics from a Character Options toy should be possible. Once the prototype comes in, I'll see whether or not applying electronics will limit the extension length.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Always nice to see these coming out, I have several Russ replicas versions. I would recommend adding a war doctor version, it wouldn't be that many more parts and would be easily added with the existing models

I might consider doing a war doctor version after this run, as that sonic was made off of a CO toy, and it would probably be more accurate to simply modify one of those. I believe some members have already put up some tutorials, they are just floating around somewhere on this site. Essentially, a metal version, accurate to the prop, would be less accurate than modifying a readily available baker screwdriver toy.

Hmm, that would be cool if possible. If I didn't by my first post I'll add my interest. :)

sweet! please keep us informed.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Sorry, just saw this - may be the chaos of the holidays keeping folks away from the board.
But yes, I am very interested! :) My intention is to use the internals of a 10th Doctor Wand Co Sonic in it if at all possible since I desperately want a Wand Co Classic and hopefully can use this until they do one (if they ever do)....

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

I'm definitely interested, this looks fantastic. I'll after wait till after Christmas to confirm (see how much money gets spent!) but I certainly want to pick some of these up!!

yeah the ID of the body will define a lot... do you know the ID?

and roughly the length you have to work with?

might be able to squeeze in an Arduino Pro-mini and some sound board...

Hi,
Just to add to this will the two half be telescopic, spring loaded? If it is the centre shaft would be better not going all the way through to the bottom half as this will also limit room for electronics.
I have one with electronics in from Sanholo80 which is telescopic and operates the electronics via a read switch and magnet. I can send you some photos?

Thanks and have a great Christmas,
Phil.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Keeping an eye on this. Wondering how your dimensions will compare to the RussRep version.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Currently, I am away from home in the land down under, so I cannot find the exact ID of the body. The center rod does go the entire way through the sonic, which would normally limit electronics, but with the design that I have in mind I can show your all how to build this screwdriver with a full extension range and working sound. I don't believe that the Wand Co electronics will work, as the sonic orientation for activation is different than the 9/12 sonic. Also, removing the light for the electronics could damage the IR circuit that is needed in order for the remote to function. Next, I do not believe comparing my dimensions to Russ' version would be a very good interpretation of accuracy. Russ' machine work was excellent, but a keen eye can find that there were several problems with his sonics, most notable of them the flat bottom and halved imitation magnet. More information will come as he prototype is assembled, sometime in January. More to come!

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Please add me to the interest list. I'd go for an assembled unit if that becomes an option.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Hi,
Yes count me in for a kit....a Mr Baker for me.

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

Ok folks, this is what the options for a completed unit will be like.
Telescoping Halo, spring loaded grip, and painted.
However, there will be no sound.
These will go for about 125 USD, and the price will vary depending on what the owner would like to have customized.

(This list will still be revised as things are finalized)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Options for completed units are listed below. These will be made to order and things can be customized.

Pertwee
Mariner tape over yellow paint on upper column.
Bright red gloss paint on secondary band and halo ring.
Mariner tape pattern on handle.
No alnico Magnet.
Matte black neck “bullet”

Baker
Burgundy paint only on outside of brass halo
Painted red burgundy flat head screw for securing Alnico Magnet
Matte black Alnico Magnet
Gloss black activator lines and cone hole
Matte black neck “bullet”

Davison
Regular (gloss red) Alnico Magnet
Brass Magnet Screw
Gloss black activator lines and cone hole.
Matte black neck “bullet”

Options:
Gloss black or matte black for activation rings?
Cape cod mirror polish, machine finish, or steel wooled(0000).

Wearing around edges of halo
30 degree orientation of magnet
Steel wooled surface finish
(Weathered)

Clean halo and magnet
Vertical Magnet orientation(Can still be customized)
Cape Cod Cloth treated surface finish.
(Pristine)

I should get some news from the shop about he prototypes; the NY has kept everybody busy and off work.
Other than that, just keep an eye on this thread!

please update the thread with measurements when you have them.

length open
length closed
OD of body
ID of body..

I'd like to try and make my own electronics if possible so I can have sound..etc

thanks.

The section that will be open for electronics will be 20 mm in diameter, and 50 mm tall extended. There is no stop for the retraction so that the grip can be fully retracted, so it is up to you if you are going to add electronics to determine how far the grip will retract. I know Russ' version had an early stop for his grip in order to fit electronics in. His sonics don't fully retract like seen on the show.

If you'd like you can send me some photos. I won't be making any electronics packages though, but I will try and make the sonic as much electronics friendly as possible without compromising the slide function.

Prototype are coming in and will plenty of photos will be coming soon. :)

Re: Doctor Who Machined Classic Sonic Pertwee/Baker/Davison Kit

thanks for the info..

I might want to do an electronics kit..

20mm = 0.78in

so thats plenty of room to fit an Arduino Pro-Mini in there..

(and its roughly 1.3in in length)

but that by itself wont get you any audio.. more of just some blinky lights and switch interaction...etc

I have a custom Arduino/Audio board I use, but.. to find a speaker to fit this?

and we still need to think of battery options?

if all the above can be talked about and sorted.... what kind of feature/effects are 'we' looking for?

looking forward to the pics!!!
