Doctor Who - A Journal of Impossible Things (Novelized Version)

Work and school have slowed me down. I just have to color correct the journal picture, add the lens flares, add the spine title, and the front pocket watch and I'm done.

Mine's getting there too. I didn't really do much today besides start the runes again. They look better this time around though so I'm happy. Still got a lot to do but between doing housework and raising and entertaining a kid, I don't get too much time to do anything with it. Hopefully tomorrow will be better but I do want to get back to pepping my Iron Man armor too lol.

Yeah, I guess I probably have a bit more free time than the average person around here. I'm a self-employed single guy who is done with all of his schooling. I love being able to say "I'm going to photoshop a book cover at work today! Why? Because I feel like it!"

And, WarMachine, sounds like we're working on all the same projects. I have a pepped Mark III chest and back piece sitting next to me, and am going to resin and glass them soon (I at least want something to wear for the premiere.

Keep the updates coming, guys!

-Nick

Haha, that's awesome. I've got most of the chest cut out, I just need to score it and start gluing it together. So far I've got a shoulder, a bicep and the helmet done. Need to resin and glass those too lol. I've got the supplies, I'm just having a hard time actually finding the time to sort them out. I almost did War Machine instead as those pep files look a little easier to do. Less bends lol. I'm gonna stick with IM though. WM might be my next build if IM goes well.

Well, being mostly done with my cover (Until I can get a proof made up and get my copy of Pack Animals) I got a little bored last night and whipped this up:

titlepage.png

It's a little too wide, I think, but both the title and autograph are properly spaced and aligned with each other as best as I can tell.

When I make up my own book I'll handwrite the autograph onto the page to make it more authentic.

-Nick

You have idea how exciting this is for me. I love books and props! That combined with ZERO photoshop skills...:lol

Thank you in advance for making it available. When it comes out, I will PM you my eBay user name so that you will know I will NEVER steal and sell your work.

I do plan on going to Kinkos and making a few gloss covers up and give them out as gifts!

That's weird, I thought I posted an hour ago but it's gone now. Well here's my progress:

I'm pretty much done, there are just a couple of small things I might want to tweak a little bit, like the glow on the "Verity Newman" texts and that slightly funky spot where I erased the fob chain.

If you're giving these as gifts, you must have the most wonderfully nerdy friends ever! I wish I had more friends like that...well I just wish I had friends :p

Seriously though, that sounds like and awesome idea! Wish I knew people who gave me obscure replica props as gifts! I'd be their friend for life.

And, Risu, that looks amazing. And as for the tweaks, I feel like this project will never be done until one of us gets our hands on an actual cover and can settle the questions we have about the colors definitively.

...if only that were possible. *Wink* Are you listening BBC *Wink*

-Nick

Well, I'd like to think my colors are pretty darn accurate if not just because I've spent the last year of my life training my eyes to see how the lighting in Who messes with color. Really, outside of school and work that's about all I do. I'm right there with you Nick, haha.

Kinko's charges roughly $2.50 to print one of these covers. As soon as my copy of Pack Animals shows up and I verify the measurements I'll print one out and take a pic.

Btw, why do you guys want the one she signed to Damien? I'd much rather make up a message that she might have signed in the Doctors copy and write it in.

Hmmmm good point. Although she didn't catch on to him being "The Doctor" or the same guy until she'd already signed it. It probably just said "To The Doctor .... Verity Newman". We have her signature though so it'd be easy to write "To The Doctor".

It did look like she wrote a lot more than that though, even if she was just pretending about lol.

So now that you have the cover, who's going to actually write, print and get bound editions made to complete the illusion? ;)

It would be interesting to know how the slim amount of time the matron (bollocks if I can remember her character name!) spent with John Smith/The Doctor that it amounts to that weighty of a tome?

I didn't catch the detail reading the thread so far, but in the Whoniverse was the book designated 'fiction' or 'nonfiction'?

Very interesting thought indeed!

So... Has anyone taken a stab and reproducing the actual journal itself? I know there was a little one that came with a sonic a while back...

Yea, I've still got one left if you're interested. You can find pics in the junkyard.

The novel version was deemed nonfiction, but apparently only because the author insisted she didn't make it up. And yea, it is a bit of a stretch to imagine her writing a whole book about the brief experience, but RTD had to inflate that sequence until it was good and bloated, like his ego. :lol Just kidding, RTD was the best.

You also have to remember that John Smith was at Farringham for a few months and part of the book could be about Verity's perception and connection to her grand/great grandmother, rather than it being strictly about The Doctor.

...At least that's what I plan on doing when I write up a full version of it.

-Nick

I'm still surprised you're going to do that. Just reading the back cover bored me to tears, a whole book of that would be a real pain to write.

True, also if they did a novelisation of the episode, it would be the same size as a Torchwood novel. And if she went into more detail about her relationship with John Smith and talked briefly about her job and past as a lead in to the man story, it could easily be a decent sized book.

I'm still only outlining it, but I promise it won't be as painful as the synopsis on the back...at least I'm trying for it not to be.

I'm going to work up my detailed outline, then move onto other projects (Iron Man suit and a Daft Punk helmet) for a bit. Once I finish those, I'll return to writing the whole shebang!

For now, I'm just focusing on proofing up my file.

-Nick

And I have to ask, have you ever print and bound a book before? If not, it's not as easy as you might think, nowhere near actually.

I have, but when I do this, I'll hand it over to a printer to print and bind. I don't really feel like trying to make sure 250 pages worth of signatures are perfectly aligned.

I'm saving my binding energy for when I make my own leather journal.
