Designer says renovating Astoria’s ‘The Goonies’ house to ’80s style is ‘restoring a memory’
Emmy-winning production designer James Pearse Connelly and his team are working to restore the Astoria house featured in "The Goonies" to help celebrate the movie's 40th anniversary.
As a busy designer whose credits include “The Masked Singer,” “The Voice,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Connelly and his team researched “The Goonies,” and consulted original materials from its production, including drawings and files.
Connelly carries what he calls a “Bible,” a “300-page book of every screenshot from the 20-minute scene in the movie” where the house is featured.
For the renovation, “We go throughout the entire house, inside and outside. We are repainting the house, re-doing the machine in front of the house, doing the attic, and transforming that into the way it was.”
The vision, Connelly said, is to be “as precise as possible. However, you can’t get everything, you know, I mean, some of this stuff just doesn’t exist. So, we’re remaking it, almost exactly as it was in the movie.”
