Doc's foam/fiberglass work + Mark 42 painted pieces

Re: Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo updates

What did you use to connect the joints in the hands? Wires? Zip ties?

Re: Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo updates

I'm going to use Nu-life paint. It's made for leather boots. And it's very flexible.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Holy smokes!!! That turned out great. Really great.

Re: Doc's foam work + completed IM glove with ribbed fingers and comparison photo

Yea it can get confusing. It cracks cuz the paint didnt adhere well to the foam. You have to make sure the paint will bond to the surface of coating. Also the foam has to be properly sealed. but Whats the most important I mean real important is when you apply paint after adhesion promoter. Check specific flash time on the brand your using. make sure you dont get piece dirty before adhesion promoter. I will apply 4 coats of adhesion promoter now. first coat is a light one then when it starts to flash apply 2nd and 3rd coat thicker and watch when it starts to flash between coats and 4th real thick but watch out for runs then I immediatly apply paint. I do not put filler primer anymore the more I researched i read that the less coats you put the more flexibility it will have. And first coat of paint is just a very light coat. it is called the "tack coat" and will help the adhesion process. so when the 1st one is dry apply 2nd thicker. So what ever brand you use look at specifications and follow to the tee n you should be fine. I will show step by step on tutorial soon. Try this new coating I figured out to use. Believe me it is tons better than plastidip n I think that stuff sucks for foam to tell ya the truth. Theres other ways to get a nice finish and I am knowledgeable with fiberglass and body work but my goal is to make a method is not labor intensive and easy that even a beginner can achieve. Like my pops would say "A lazy mans always thinkin" :lol

Hi Doc,

Great work so far. I've been trying your latest steps to paint but I'm coming across cracks. So I reread the thread and came across this section. I think my problem was that my initial coat of sem flexible primer was too thick and not a mist. But I wanted o ask you how importanttiming is. I know if i don't let the paint dry with the minimum flash time it will cause issues with the paint, but what i wanted to know is waiting too long for the next coat going to be an issue? Or do I need to appply the next coat right after the flash time.

I wanted to know if the scheduale below good for getting a great coat/

After Liquid electrical tape step.

1.apply mist of SEM primer.
wait 10min
2. apply a thicker coat of SEM pimer.
Wait 10 min.
3. apply misting coat coat of of Duplicolor Metal specks paint.
Wait 1 hr
4. apply a 2nd thicker coat of paint

Let me know what you think.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

No ya shouldnt have no trouble waiting longer in between coats. And those steps look right. Now let me ask ya a few questions...
1.did you let the LET cure atleast 24hrs before applying primer?
2. Did you prep before primer like wash with dish soap to maje sure no contaminants are on piece?

If ya answered no to any of the 2 questions then theres your problem. These are the main causes besides not apply light coat first "tack coat"
Even lightly scuff in between coats with some 400 grit for to be certain each coat will adhere if you want. Also if you need to handle piece wear latex gloves or somthin. Take time to prepare piece or waste time fixing it. Good luck

thanks Doc. I did wait 24hrs after the 2nd coat of LET. But I didn't prep the piece before priming. I'll be sure to wash the piece and use a light coat.

hey Doc! do you think I can get the same results if I used the bottle kind of modpodge instead of the spray can?

Re: Doc's foam Ironman, warmachine and Mark 6 leg mobility example vid

Finally after so many failures I got a functional inner thigh piece that is as close as I could get it to the real thing. I just need to widen it alittle but its attached with velcro so it can be removed. I couldnt stand the huge gap there and now it looks awesome. The customers gnna flip:D I hope this vid isnt upside down too:lol Enjoy:cool

That does it, after seeing this picture,I'm remaking my legs as I didn't scale them properly on my first build. It's such an inspiration to see the level of detail that can be achieved with foam, especially from Doc"foam genius"holiday

Also what size foam do you'd use and how do you paint it;)....It wouldn't seem right to not include those questions on a Doc topic that you "never" get asked:lol

If your good with a brush then yes you can. Cuzcif your not it will leave brush strokes. Once dry you can wet sand smooth if ya have to.

thanks doc! i took off the plastic bristles to avoid brush strokes and use the flat side to paint. I guess I would use the spray can but wanted something I can work inside the house. plus weather here sucks anyways.
