Doc's foam/fiberglass work + Mark 42 painted pieces

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Thanks for the reply mate, but unfortunately no we don't have either of those franchises Down Under. I've had a look today and found some other options that might be worth a look into. No rush seeing as I'm not actually making anything that requires it just now, but good to know for future reference.

Doc,

As always, thanks for all your research and testing to help us get the best possible final product. I have one question on the products now used; Do we just follow the label for dry / cure times on each step or is there a more specific timeline that you follow?

Thanks again!

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Hey doc. i used styrospray 1000 on my helmet and its pretty durable. still has some flex too. i brushed it on cuz i didnt have the proper equipment. has some runs in it but its sandable. im gonna try to get a hopper gun thingy so i can spray it on a couple pieces to see how it turns out. i dont know how to start a thread or post a video to show the results. but this stuff works nicely

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Hey doc! Really nice painting method, it seems to be just perfect to color the foam costumes like you did it!
But could you answer just one question - how much spray paint, liquid electrical tape, elastometric coating, etc. did you use to cover the whole suit, or how many it seems to be when you complete it? (Too long to explain, but I have to buy all the materials in one trip).
Sorry for bothering, but please, give the answer in any of units of volume, like liters, or gallons, or O.Z., whatewer. I don't know if the spray cans you bought and the ones I can buy have the same volume...

Ok, did some testing and the method does work. I tried it on some 12mm and 6mm foam with both Duplicolor and some cheap Krylon paint. The photos show the amount of bending that it can take. The paint did eventually crack, but it took alot of punishment before it did. Also, on a side note, the Krylon outperformed the Duplicolor paint and was much more flexible.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Hey thanks everyone srry havent posted been real busy n sick at same time..sucks but oh well. Great test Base n the for everyone to SEM have paints as well that are elastomers. Im gonna try and see if they have metallic colors. But I would think ya can get an even better, stronger piece with all the same brand. Also remember everybody the less coats of paint the more flexible it will be. I try to only put 2 coats, 3 coats is pushing it but anything more than that more likely to get cracks.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

how does the paint stand up to folding in on itself in compression not just extension? Like paint to paint folding in. All the examples also show extension only. I've found The compression really causes a lot of more wrinkles more than the extension

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

he made some videos of some compression tests where he was pushing on the center of a piece with his finger. I don't think anyone has shown any results for folding a piece in half like you describe.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

All great info guys! Doc has a great point w/ the paint brand as well:thumbsup. Im anxious to see how the linear brand scape comes out.
Keet it up Doc.

Have you done anything to try to solve your problem? Didnt think so. If you think ya can come up with somthin better by wll means go ahead. This method was a way to have a more Easy, durable ,comfortable suit that can withstand natural movement. Not for it to withstand being bent in half both in and out or crushed. Dont know what ya guys plan on doing with your suits but this method was for it just to be worn and flexes with body. So unless you plan on being a vigilante/crime fighter, exercising in it or taking a nap in it this isnt the method for ya but if ya just wear it like a normal person would its perfect. Lol I'll apologize before hand for this comment Im sick peoples lol;D

relax, I was just asking like the motion of bending forward at the waist, or when your raise your legs the top of the leg gets rolled onto itself that type of thing. If this painting method "rolls" with the foam or wrinkles. No one has posted anything with that motion in any thread not just yours. Nothing to take offense to, just a valid question

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Sorry ironman42 your right it is a valid question n I just been short these last few days hate feelin like crap anyways about your question Im incorporating pvc fabric in my current build. I didnt come up with this when I was searching ran into this EVA Foam and Stretch Vinyl for Armor - Ligthweight, Flexible and Shiny! [Pic Heavy] - Cosplay.com and comes in a variety of colors and in 2 different forms 2 way stretch and 4way stretch. It looks very promising for the pieces that are gonna need to be extremely flexible and take alot of force like when bending down like you mentioned. So id look into that.:)

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Awesome build. I haven't made it through all the pages but how did you go about sizing it up so that it fit you with clothes on?

Lastly how did you connect the toe to the foot section of the boot?

Look forward to reading the rest.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

It Looks awesome, Gonna work on sizing and I can't wait to play with these methods!

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

So much info. @.@ I can't sort it out in my head. What would you suggest if I had to build up areas to get it smooth? Bondo? I've used LET and numerous coats of mod podge but I can't seem to get it even. I'm really sorry if this has asked before.

SO funny!..this is what I was planning to do for my neck piece! A reference I was using was the Donut shop scene w/ Fury. The neck seal seems to be more vinyl/ foam in nature. Great link Doc:thumbsup

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Would the use of filler primer get rid of textured foam....my foam has both sides textured.

Re: Doc's foam work + The last foam painting method you will ever need.

Hey Doc! is there a huge difference between the spray can and the hard plastic bottle kind for the modpodge? I didn't buy the spray can because it wasn't something I could use inside the house. don't want strong small and getting people headaches. I guess I'm asking.. can you get the same results with the one inside bottle? of course I would have to brush it on.
