Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

Simply because he has been so adamant about which versions are out there and see's the Blue-Ray release as THE definitive and official cut of the films. Besides, to be honest the market out there for the original films is relatively small and likely not worth the cost of doing a restoration.

Wrong.

The size of the market is bigger than the absolute number of fans who would by it. You could charge those fans a premium price, and they'd pay it. You could bundle the discs in an extra-special-super-premium 18-disc (or however many) set which includes the prequels, the SEs, and the restored OT, along with extras, charge a premium for it, and plenty of fans would pay.

I think the bigger issue here is and always has been Lucas' attitude about the originals and "his" vision. I grant you it's POSSIBLE he put some clause in the contract about "No restoring the originals," but I could just as easily see him saying "Screw it. I don't care anymore. Gimme the cash. I'm gonna go fund Edutopia with it."

And you still bump up against what Lucas perceives as his artistic vision if using the distribution model you suggest. I don't think Disney is going to be interested in catering to a small corner of fandom when they have all new content which they will own to distribute. They don't own the distribution rights for the OT and PT, remember. Fox retains those rights. Now would Fox bother to go back and toss the Special Edition fans a bone? Highly unlikely considering they already did in a DVD release which I actually still have.

Lucas/McCallum have said that the SW TV show was "just too expensive" to make right now.

Well with Disney's cash backing that should mean this could be up and going again soon?

The thing about that - Lucasfilm was able to produce movies, but the conveyer belt nature of TV production wasn't feasible for their setup - just too many overheads. Now, for Disney, that won't be a problem. They already have a TV production setup, and I'm sure it didn't hurt the deal that there is a goldmine of scripts for a SW TV show already written.

I don't know much about the 501st, but haven't they been featured in several Lucasfilm publications, worked with them on promotional events, and teamed up with them on a number of charitable endeavors?

Having the OT theatrical cuts properly restored on Bluray would make Disney a huge profit margin. It's not a corner market. Cinephiles and movie goers the world over have been demanding this for years now, and to think that it wouldn't be cost effective to restore them properly is just plain silly. The whole "the original cuts don't exist any longer" is a lame excuse to not have to release them. We all know that Lucas saves EVERYTHING. The marketing genius that he is, he's been able to find "new unreleased material" every few years as an excuse to release Star Wars on a new format. If he has all the deleted scenes from the OT (of which only a handful appeared on the Bluray) you KNOW he has the original cuts of the films somewhere in his possession.

Disney stands to make millions on it. Even if they had to work out a deal with Fox (as I'm sure they have). If they'r going to market those films (and we all know they are) they would have to have some pull with Fox and distribution. Fox stands to make millions on it too.

Yeah, both Disney and Fox would stand to gain on the release of the theatrical OT restored on BR. The only one who didn't want to do them was Lucas because he didn't want to spend money on it. If Disney fronts the cash for the restoration and Fox distributes... he really has no argument against it.

Also, they should get the company that restored the new BR Terminator to do the restoration.

I'd actually be fine with Lowry restoring it. They did the last round of restorations, but apparently Lucasfilm dictated what was actually being changed and Lowry just did what they were told. If you look at Lowry's treatment of the Bond 50 set...trust me, these guys have the ability to properly restore a film IF left to do so.

Nobody can shut down the 501st. They will only rise stronger.

One letter from a Disney lawyer can shut down the 501st. (shrug)

But I think it more likely that Disney will simply appoint some paid supervisors to manage the 501st, essentially turning the whole organization into a Disney fan club (under Disney rules and control).

I'm more worried about fan films. All it takes is one email from a Disney lawyer to YouTube, and all the fan films there would be removed within days. And there's not a thing anyone anywhere can do about it. Yes, we would still be able to make fan films--but we wouldn't be able to SHOW them anywhere. They'd just become home movies to show your friends on your laptop.

Sorry, but that's not true.

George is keeping all the real estate, as well as the costumes and props, so no need to worry.

How do you figure? The Archives are part of Lucasfilm, they're not a separate entity. Technically ANYTHING not specifically stipulated as not part of the purchase falls in...

Have you seen the actual paperwork then?

Apologies, but this is my first access to a computer in more than a week because of the hurricane (power/heat still out at home), so I haven't read most of the responses. Has it been established what this purchase means for Indy, is that character included?

Thanks!

Yes it includes Indy. Anything with Lucas in front of it. LucasFilm, LucasArts, etc are all owned by Disney now.

I'd double check that. I want to say that Paramount has some ownership over the Indy property. Might just be distro rights, but I'm not sure.
