Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

I might be jumping the gun here, clearly we are all getting our knickers in a twist and it's bloody big news but do you know what?

There will only ever be 3 star wars films for me. SW, ESB and ROTJ. Original versions.

Everything else is the equivalent of a Macdonalds franchise. It tastes OK, but when you have eaten in the ORIGINAL hamburger joint it pales in comparison or tates a bit plastic or corner-cut.

Ultimately, SW was of it's day. It appeals because of the nostalgic value and wide-eyed optimism of youth. Any new content might be exciting and interesting but can never compare to the original phenomenon.

BINGO!

Disney could make this work. When I normally think Disney, I think of cute and fury, then remember they also did films like TRON and DRAGON SLAYER which was not cute or fury. I hope we get a new live action film(s) and an end to the 3D cartoon stuff that is THE CLONE WARS.

Dragon Slayer was made when Disney had no frigging clue who they were, or what they wanted to be. It got made in that weird period where the company was essentially fumbling around in the dark, and I have no confidence we'll see anything like that now.
One interesting tidbit I saw elsewhere:

“We like Star Wars’ potential on TV as well. And we think DisneyXD is a great home for that.”

Now, isn't that interesting? Underworld anyone? Though clearly not the gritty, Deadwood-esque show McCallum promised.

I agree, it won't seem like SW without the 20th century logo.

Although, Marvel films dont' start with a disney logo do they?

Doesn't matter, just missing the Fox logo and fanfare will feel....wrong. Just like it felt wrong for the CW movie. Oh well, we'll have to rely on fan-editors to put it back.

I have to admit,i'd rather not have a possible Thrawn Trilogy on the big screen with new actors. It just seems wrong. That aside though..I would love to see some TOR films.

I don't think this has been addressed yet, but, how they hell did they keep this quiet until the announcement? When they bought pixar it was in the press for months before it happend.

You'd think the back and forth and audits and everything else that had to be done would have raised a flag and a leak would have happened somewhere along the line. It's not like this is the type of deal you knock out over lunch.

This has been puzzling me too - something this huge and not a whisper? Incredible. Thought I was reading a prank piece when I came across it.

I admire the fan-edits, but I'd HATE it if they are they best version we can get. That's just wrong. I don't want to have to reply on those things, I like my film genuine and first-hand. But transferred sensitively to the source material

Oh, I'm just thinking of splicing the BD version of the opening fanfare onto whatever home-video releases we get from now on, definetly not fidling around with the movies. Adywan had an interesting experiment, but I honestly feel he played with the same pointless fan-wank that people accuse Lucas of. That said, I did see a pretty nice cut of Crystal Skull the other day.....

Something ELSE just occurred to me; the announcement that the whole 3D experiement had been moved up to next year, instead of spaced out to 2017 as originally planned, happened, what, late summer? Right around the time Pablo says he was informed that the new trilogy was underway? So, they've got these 5 library titles ready to release in 3D, and now have to get them out of the way of the new trilogy. It all makes a bit more sense now, doesn't it?

I just do not see the point.
I mean why?
Is it as case of, 'Well, it's a good price, I've got the cash - why not.' Like me walking past a bakery and seeing a cake I like in the window.
What on earth do Disney hope to gain? If you've got $4 billion odd spare how much more do you need to generate?
Or is it just the prestige?
Do they honestly think they can revitalise SW in the eyes of the old fans with new material, or do they just want to generate new income from new stories that has the SW (much like the majority of c**p merchandise released month after month) logo stamped upon it?
For me, this seems to be the beginning of the end.
Perhaps a few good things will come of this - more archive material from the OT, the preservation of remaining models, costumes and props, but from a viewpoint of furthering the story - why bother.

Our family has Disneyland park passes and I can tell you that the Star Tours ride consistantly has the longest lines and the SW store is packed with people lined up with merchandise. It is one of the bigest draws at the park and I'm sure now it will be expanding like crazy. I'm looking forward to it myself and I know my kids are now very excited. :thumbsup
