Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

With a huge disney nut in my office and me, I felt this was appropriate when she came by with her figure and shared the news with me (not that I didn't already know).

I guess it won't be too long before the OT gets "re-imagined". If Disney does decide to 're-imagine' SW, I hope they start with EP I - the PT is the only part of SW that needs re-imagining!

I'm nervous for collecting... though maybe they will finally produce high quality licensed armor instead of that Rubie's junk.

On another note, I wish I had dumped all my 401K money into Disney stock yesterday.

Thank the good lord above for Mickey. Somehow I knew someday this would happen after they acquired Marvel. I'm so frakking excited now. Star Wars is such a cash cow and Disney knows it. Bring on the Star Wars themed resorts.
Now we'll great movies and TV show, it's on now :)

I'd just like to say that this is my first post in this thread.

:lol

Seriously though, what a strange announcement! I've been a fan since I saw the original Star Wars in '77. Not sure what to make of this news yet.

Just throwing my two cents into the mix.

I have a bad feeling about this.

Disney is famously litigious, and sues everyone and anyone for perceived IP rights infringements at the drop of a hat. Lucas has shown a surprisingly high level of tolerance for amateur Star Wars costuming, replica props, etc. Disney corporate culture is VERY different. So, this community may be in big trouble.

And if you think Disney will take care of the franchise, don't be so sure - they have owned the Muppets for YEARS, and didn't do anything worthwhile with them until very recently, and have completely failed to follow up on that marginal success and keep the momentum going. And the Muppet consumer products they have rolled out are simply awful. If you have any complaints about the recent Star Wars merchandising, just WAIT - it will get much worse.

Perhaps, since the Star Wars franchise is so much more lucrative than the Muppets, Disney will treat it well. And they already have some experience with it, with Star Tours, the Star Wars weekends, etc.

I just hope the next Star Wars film is actually live action, and not all CGI.

Sigh.

Oh, I'm just thinking of splicing the BD version of the opening fanfare onto whatever home-video releases we get from now on, definetly not fidling around with the movies. Adywan had an interesting experiment, but I honestly feel he played with the same pointless fan-wank that people accuse Lucas of. That said, I did see a pretty nice cut of Crystal Skull the other day.....

Something ELSE just occurred to me; the announcement that the whole 3D experiement had been moved up to next year, instead of spaced out to 2017 as originally planned, happened, what, late summer? Right around the time Pablo says he was informed that the new trilogy was underway? So, they've got these 5 library titles ready to release in 3D, and now have to get them out of the way of the new trilogy. It all makes a bit more sense now, doesn't it?

I thought they were putting it off because the 3D in TPM was awful. It was truly the worst 3D I've seen in a movie.

Like someone else said, I also had to check the calendar. I'm kind of shocked. I hope Lucasfilm still has enough influence to tell Disney to take it easy on the fans, within reason. It wouldn't be good to tick off a part of your potential paying customers who the new movies are targeted for.

My other concern is continuity with the SW Expanded Universe. Lucas mentioned books, video games, etc. in the announcement so I'm hoping they will incorporate and/or work around those stories. I really hope we get to see Mark Hamill come back to play Luke though.

While 4 billion dollars is a lot of money, I somehow would have guessed that the Lucas would have received more for the movies, the rights, the various companies, etc.
