Die Hard 5 - A Good Day to Die Hard (Post-release)

I haven't seen 5 yet, but 4 got dumb at that scene with the jet...my feeling is to go in with no expectations...just be glad that John McClain got another (possibly his last) chance to be seen again in a new movie.

I agree with you in part, however the problem is it's not john McClain. It's Bruce Willis as......well, Bruce Willis.

I would love to of seen a Die Hard 5 with cameos from original members of the cast, such as Richard Thornberg, Sgt Al Powell, and maybe a Holly Gennero.

I would of been a helluva lot more forgiving then.

My problem with 4 was that if he hadn't been called John McClane, I wouldn't have known it was Die Hard. It was so generic. And it had zero 80s charm...that damn sidekick guy was such a hip gimmick. Blech.

For me there are only two Die Hard films, 1 and 2.

The action on this new one was okay, but it just didn't feel like a Die Hard movie.

I give 3 a pass because it came out close to the others. But it's very different in tone and execution, so if it had come out twenty years after the fact a la 4-5, I'd be less receptive to it. Not making him trapped somewhere kinda killed what made the others fun. I know you can't do the same schtick over and over, but...

He was there mostly to help John McClane navigate through the problem they are involved in while illustrating just how much the world has changed around him. That's what the Die Hard movies are all about after all, putting McClane outside his comfort zone yet still being able to save the day in the end. So part 4 was every bit a part of the series as any of the others, even though, yes, there were moments if improbability that takes you out of the story, but those are few.

Explosions: check.
Gun fights: check.
Car chases with lots of crashes: check.
Wanton destruction: check
Mi24 Hind helicopter gunship: check.
Death defying feats of awesomeness: check.

You guys are seriously treating the Die Hard franchise as if it's Oscar calibre cinematic gold. It's always been just a popcorn flick guy's movie. Seems to meet the appropriate criteria as such. Don't be so critical and you may actually enjoy a movie every once in awhile.

I think it's safe to say the first DH is so beloved because it was a much better movie than the average action flick. Crank won't be a beloved classic 25 years from now. It has explosions and stuff too.

I just got back from watching DH5 and i enjoyed it. Put your brain in neutral for 90 mins and watch it for what it is and you'll enjoy it! Number 2 is still my favourite though....watch it every Christmas!

It was loud, dumb and fun. Pretty much what I wanted. None of them hold a candle to the first, but I'll take as many as they want to give me.

Okay... this has been eating away at me. Even if I watched it twice already; at first with friends and earlier today with my mom and sis, I still cannot get the scene.

In the ballroom of the hotel, when they were zip-tied, Jack managed to cut his bonds and attacks the bad guys. John attacks the "dancing" badguy... how did his bonds get cut??? He manages to get free and pummel the guy with his fists. Bad editing I guess.

Also, why are the scenes in the trailer different from the actual movie? Like that "not a hugging family" scene, and even the scene where the girl unzips and takes a few steps was cut short.

I wondered exactly the same thing?! :facepalm

what worked in the original DH was Mclane being solo. Lose the side kicks and Jack and maybe we'll have something....

Just saw this at the weekend. I thought it was dismal. The editing was terrible, the sound was laughable as was the script and delivery.

While I'm at it, what is with modern film-makers and their love affair with shaking the camera all over the place? Especially when the scene doesn't warrant it? Lock down the effing camera every once in a while would you please?

I'm with u at that one. The shakey cam needs to be relegated to explosions only, if even then.
