Die Hard 5 - A Good Day to Die Hard (Post-release)

I just got back from watching this tonight and I can confirm its an action spectacular. Personally I don't think we saw as much of Mclaine's wit in this one which was a shame, but overall it was a decent cinema experience.

Compared to Hansel and Gretel this looked like a master piece! I also liked a couple of nods to the original movie.

3.5/5

is it just me? everytime i see Bruce Willis now, he always acts the same in every movie.

and he seems to have a strange face these days.

The major problem this movie has is that it's Bruce Willis on screen, not John Mclaine. Yes he drops a few F-bombs and his catch phrase is said as it was in the original movie. But he was just lacking any of JM wit and sarcasm.

It's a good action movie, but it's not a Die Hard movie IMO.

While I didn't hate it, this film is certainly the weakest in the franschise. Poor dialogue, bad script, bad cinematography and a mediocre villian. I just looked up the director for this and discovered he's actually dircted very few films and the ones he did make were not very good. Why the studio trusted him with a mega franchise like this is beyond me.

And the script was written by the same guy that wrote X-men Origins: Wolverine. It was bound to be bad.

THANK YOU. See, I haven't sen this movie, but that's what I keep seeing in the trailer is it's an action movie starring Bruce Willis as not John McClaine.

1-3 are solid films. The later one just doesn't have that McClaine spark. It's odd because it's THE actor who has always portrayed him, but he just seems really out of place from that role.

Now see I liked Live Free of Die Hard because he seemed out of his element much like the first film. He was totally at the mercy of the tech kid for help.

See, I couldnt stand that one. Thats the only one I really didnt like. They made Mclane into a damn terminator. Like when the semi-truck was falling off the freeway and he was running up the back of the trailer? Or when he was in the core of the computer and it was cold and that dude was jumping around like Spider-man? I couldnt help but wonder "what the hell am I watching?" :rolleyes

I just hope that this film does not turn out to be the "Batman and Robin" of the franchise. I would really like to see at least one more...well written Die Hard with Willis.

Well, before the thing gets rebooted anyway.

The snark I would say as the trailers were released was that this film looked like a pretty crazy DLC pack for a Call of Duty game. I was pretty disappointed to see that the film acted out like that, just the thinnest of excuses to string together action beats.
Boy did that bob and weave camera motion get tiresome when they would continue to do it in quieter dialogue heavy close-ups!
If you took them out of context of the franchise and the film's logic, the car stunts were pretty decent...there, I said one good thing, so it's not a complete wash.

I saw this Wednesday night. I think I can honestly say it was the weakest in the series and this is after having a meh reaction to Live Free or Die Hard. It just didn't feel like a Die Hard movie. It felt more like some generic Bruce Willis action film. He wasn't his usual smartass self and he just kept saying "I'm on vacation!!!!!!" The thing I like about the first 3 films is that he had all that stuff thrust upon him. He was simply minding his osm business and SHTF. He was out of his element in the movies and he had to take hold of the situation. In the last two, he pretty much went looking for trouble.

Also the shooting style didn't match the series at all with all the quick zoom in/outs. Also the end was terrible as a happy ending shouldn't happen in a die hard flick, it should just end. Not walking into the sunset.

Should you go see it? If you like Bruce Willis or if you're a fan of Die Hard, sure why not. If you have any hesitations, just wait to rent it on home video. Ultimately you're not missing anything.

I was expecting in the end that his son would use the same trick with the fire-hose that John used in Die Hard.

I was bitterly disappointed in DH5. No script, no humour, McClane was indestructible and the plot "twists" were ridiculous. Don't bother.

I thought number four was unwatchable, so if the consensus is that this is worse, easy pass.

I must have been watching a different movie from you, cuz i liked it a lot. Sure McClane was made to seem a bit indestructible at the end with the semi and the bridge and the jet, but beyond that it was good. Getting a little nervous about DH5, though, with everything I've heard so far.
