Ya mean Beatty might actually produce another Tracy film before he drops dead...??? The guy's at least 73 now!
The 1990 film DID make money for Disney but wasn't a huge hit.
I liked the film, too, because it was so different from other genre films and embraced its roots instead of changing everything like 95% of the other films based on comic book and comis strips seem to do!
Besides the color schemes and great make-up appliances, it had a sweet, simple story behind it and a great soundtrack. It's one of my favorite Danny Elfman scores. Heck, the Madonna CD tie-in, is good, too, and I dislike her intensely, too! :lol
Very good casting in that film and it's the only Madonna performance that I witnessed that was good, too.
Yes, the 1990 Dick Tracy film deserves remastering and restoration for a quality Blu ray release. The existing DVD is a joke... It was mastered quickly from the same masters used for the LD and VHS versions that came out in 1991 or thereabouts. I haven't seen the earlier serials of Tracy or the animated TV series, but judging from what I've read of the reprinted Chester Gould Dick Tracy comic strips the 1990 film sure sounds like it's the most faithful film adaptation of the comic strip. It's the real deal and you can tell that Beatty put his heart into his film.
For that matter, The Rocketeer also needs some restoration/remastering work before it gets a decent Blu ray release as well.
These are two Disney films that seem to be neglected by the House of Mouse and I can't quite understand it. They're not the best films of all time but they're certainly a lot better than most action films let alone the superhero shlock that we're getting an overload of right now!
