The moire on my medical tric initially did not spin, but I whacked it on the side a couple of times and it has worked fine since.

Hmmm... I just got my medical... and I think you guys that want to paint your screens might be right. To be honest... I don't like the screen that's in it. The two bulbs don't look very good and the graphic doesn't really look like much of a screen. It probably would look better in gray.

Just picked one up at TOYS R US LOUISVILLE, KY.
Saw TOS comm -- grids are now PLASTIC -- I'm sure this is old news, but still sad -- wouldn't have been so bad if it still looked like metal grid, but holes are smaller and grid wheels look more like those on Playmates comm.
Also saw grey-handled phaser -- it looked cool, but I passed. Maybe I'll pick one up later.

okay, this is weird...
pulled my science tricorder out of package last night and started playing around with it...and it actually started working
and by "working" I don't mean it sputtered Nimoy's sound bites -- the thing actually started functioning as a true 23rd century tricorder
must have been some sort of fluke
I should have made a video showing what it does, but instead I busted it open to see if I could reverse engineer it, and for the life of me i can't make sense of the components and I have no idea how to put it all back together
but i did find it interesting that even in the 23rd century, it looks like stuff is still being made in China.

I went out and bought the science tricorder from Toys R Us on Saturday. I am pleased
but wished they had a bit better quality control. Everyone had lumpy
and scratched silver paint in the button area.
The first thing I'm going to do is fix the paint, and change out that horrible
screen art. I would also like to speed up the changing color LED on the hand scanner.
It changes very slow.
Overall I give this tricorder a thumbs up for the money.
But needs some work to be added to my display area.

Not slighting anyone who upgrades the tricorder toy -- and please post pics -- but I am either growing too old or too lazy (or both) -- but upgrading the toy seems like waaaaaay too much work for little payback. But then again, I happen to be fortunate enough to own an MR tricorder, so I regard the Diamond Select piece simply as a toy.
As I have the MR as my collector's piece, I don't intend to "display" the toy -- I simply cart it around with me to work or wherever and pull it out to amuse myself (and hopefully others) -- walk into fellow employee's office and start scanning -- when they ask what I'm doing I explain i was just certified in using the Starfleet tricorder and am scanning them to ensure I stay current in my training. Then, as I scan them, I tell them that, according to the tricorder readings, their blood pressure and respiration seem okay, but the readings appear to indicate they may be a bit "gassy."
This is why most people close their office doors when they see me coming.

one but not bad. A little paint chipping on the cross bar and some bubbles
in the screen decal, but looks good otherwise. The Spock voice clips are
really sped up, but I don't much care about that anyway.
The hand scanner has a soft touch grip, vinyl I think. The LED cycles through
several colors, slow at first, then fast then slow again. No sound for this

got my science version today in the mail, tricorder plays great the little scanner needs new batteries but other than that very happy with it.

The payback is in the fun one can have building something! I've been messing around with this for a few days. Gutted the electronics, just want to make a reasonable prop replica for display. I scored an old watch on Ebay with the correct saphire crown, took it apart, made a silicone mold of the crown base and have made up a bunch of resin castings. The "saphire" is styrene rod turned to the proper eliptical shape and painted blue. The faceplate itself is styrene and the screen made from a large plastic soda bottle.
Going to repaint all the "aluminum" parts, probably paint the "kydex" parts as well. A new strap should round out this minor rebuild/upgrade. Sorry for the lack of quality in these pics, just a few quick snapshots, the flash is a bit harsh. Will take more/better pictures as I put this thing back together.

Thanks for the compliments guys. This actually looks much better than these marginal pics.
DrMcoy, take a closer look! None of the silver stuff is re-painted yet!! You are seeing the black plastic after I started to clean up the gobby silver paint. The horizontal bar looks a little like aluminum with black reflections... It's not. Just the bare black plastic showing thru an incomplete sanding job. I will be using paint, I think I can airbrush a nice enough finish, metal foils seem to be too much trouble for this project (now I'm sounding like your original post!!).
I think I could cast up a few of the watch crowns for folks. They're really tiny and a little bit of fooling around. I made a punch so I could punch out the center clear thru (cleaner than drilling these small parts). The styrene "saphire" rod actually extend thru the crown base out the back about a 1/4 inch, makes for a solid mounting pin. I'll get back to you on that.
Pump, As you can see, I've got another tric in the wings. I'll be tearing that one apart soon, and I'll set up to document it. The thing comes apart, to an extend, pretty easily. Getting the hood off and then the faceplate off requires some surgery. Trying to find a nice and neat way to do this but it might always come down to some carefully applied force, as it's all gobbed together with solvent cement... Since I knew going in I was going to gut the electronics and the screen/faceplate I was not too concerned with damage to some parts...
More to follow over the next few days, have several days off of work around the 4th holiday.

Finally ordered a medical. I have an MR so don't need a science. What I really want it the scanner! Got it for $42.00 shipped on eBay. Since I have it coming, may as well put some metal to it. What i really want is the scanner. :lol
