Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

Can someone post pics of theirs so that we know what to look for?

Here's my Jewelarama banjo pin.

Also, and on-topic, check out the custom tric that deck5 recently built.

Today, DST addressed the manual spinner in the medical tricorder's scanner:

"While we would have liked a motor and sound in there, it was just too expensive for production. With all the features we added to the Tricorder the cost kept going up. At one point we needed to make the SRP 50.00 which for all of us was a breaking point for a toy we decided we could not go over 50.00."

So what's the diffrent between the Tricorders again? :wacko

The EE exclusive medical tricorder has two medical scanning sounds and various McCoy talking phrases. The moire spins when scanning. It also comes with a separate hand-held medical scanner, which makes sounds and has a manual spinner. Available at entertainmentearth.com and newforcecomics.com for $39.99.

The science tricorder makes the regular scanning sound and various Spock talking phrases. The moire spins when scanning. It also has a "call-back" feature (previously described in this thread). It also comes with a separate hand-held "other" medical scanner, which generates a blinking/twinking scanning LED light (about 7 different colors). Available at multiple retailers online (newforcecomics.com, amazon.com, and many others) and in-store now at Toys 'R Us for $39.99. I think newforce sells it a little cheaper, but then there's shipping.

These are toys I've been wanting for many, many years, and both are cool and must-haves, but I favor the science version.

They should have traded the motor on the moire for the scanner.

Agreed. The medical tric was going to be slightly different anyway. They should have put the Jewelrama in there instead of the moire and then put the motor in the scanner. That would have been a better solution as well as making the medical tricorder so drastically different that most collectors would not be willing to pass it up. As it is, since the scanner is poorly executed and the tricorder itself has little to really set it apart or make it better than the science version, it's easily skippable.

Pumpernickel,

Do you know if they have addressed the defective voices on the medical tric?

They did not address the voice clip problem in the Q&A. I don't think anyone aeked it, though, as these questions were probably submitted before all the problems were reported.

You can ask that question here and see if they answer it in the blog entry for next month.

No, they have not. I'll be surprised to see them admit any defect, at least while they're still trying to sell them. But the defect--that some have reported chipmunk-sounding voiceboxes--does not affect all of them. I guess I got lucky--mine was fine. This intermitent issue might bode well for Toys 'R Us, because fans can hand-pick their own science tric in-store.

They have admitted problems early on in the past, even while still pushing the product, so they probably won't have a problem with addressing it. But the answer they will probably give is "Sorry, we didn't catch it in time. We'll try and do better next time."

The problem is they don't have their own QC person in China full time to check out problems during production. They rely on the QC people at the factories, who have no idea what to really look for. They have no idea what McCoy is supposed to sound like, nor do I think they really care enough to find out and check the units thoroughly. If any of you have talked to or heard stories from people in the toy/collectible industry you will know the kind of problems and odd results you get when dealing with a Chinese factory, especially if you are dealing with them over the phone or through email. It's the main reason there are so many problems with MR products and it is, most likely, the same problem plaguing DST. Neither company had or has the resources to have a full time QC person in China, much less the staff of them they would need to do a completely thorough job. Until they have at least one person there, full time, that is always fully teched and briefed on each and every product that goes into production, problems like this will always potentially be there.

BTW, the Enterprise-D and its AGT variant are also having the same random sound problem as the tricorder.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to order another one, with a request to test the sound before they ship it out.

What I'm hoping is that DST will make amends with the geo tric. As you know, the geo tric does not have the spinning moire. Instead, just a lit panel. This would save DST the 15 cents to buy a motor for a medical scanner for the geo. :) On the other hand, there will be added engineering costs to make the geo version. :unsure

The strength of the batteries alone can affect the tone of the voice. Mine sounded a little high but I put new batteries in it and it sounded better.

You guys are really asking too much from a $40 TOY. You simply should not expect top notch sound out of these things.

I picked up the science tricorder at TRU tonight, opened it up and immediately took it back, as the moire wouldn't spin. Checked the second one before I left, and it worked fine. The store manager said they'd already had several tricorders returned with similar defects...

I almost hate to ask if you flipped the "try me" button in the battery compartment. That's what turns on the moire and plays more than one voice clip...

Is there any way to find out on-line if a particular TRU has them in stock? I've found that calling and asking isn't always...reliable.

good luck with THAT!!

The one I called actually did seem to check it on their computer, but even then, I don't know if that's 100% reliable.
