Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

Anyone modified theirs with a Jewelarama disc?

Something that is cool in a Comm, but I can't think of why it would be in a tric.

You push a button and close it. Then it beeps back like someone from the ship is calling you.

Oh I have the comm. My friend was waiting on me to get ready one day and noticed the comm on a shelf. So he picked it up and just happened to hit that button. When the red light started flashing he was a little nervous because he actually thought it was a higher end prop. So he set it back down and it proceeded to beep incessantly until he picked it up again.

Seems a little pointless on the tricorder though.

What's a Jewlerama disc?

Hopefully, phase pistol will chime-in and give the accurate history, but my understanding is that in some early scenes in TOS a Jewelarama disc was used on the tricorder prop in place of the moire. See this screen cap from Charlie X.

More on the "call-back" feature on the science tricorder. As mentioned, they call it the "tricorder hail function" on the instruction sheet. There's two scenarios, but the coolest one is essentially a re-creation from "Arena" where the Gorn lock onto Spock's tricorder. You push the call-back button, shut the tricorder off, then a few seconds later it starts making a noise like it's short-circuiting. You open it up and Spock shouts, "they've locked onto my tricorder." Then, the tricorder makes an explosion noise and Spock makes a comment about how ingenious the Gorn were.

I did the what now? :lol

I didn't really "discover" it.. I forget who found the Jewelarama disc. I know it ws evident in shots such as the Charlie X one above, that at least one tricorder prop did not have a moire, instead it had some kind of polished metal disc that gave off a rainbow highlight.

Here's the metal disc tric in "Balance of Terror"

When the Jewelarama tricorder appears in "Galileo Seven", I was of the opinion that we were actually seeing a "motorized moire" working tric, but since then I've come to understand that this is actually not the case.

Who knows, since it's implied that the "data discs" are removable, maybe the moire is one kind of data disc, the Jewelarama is a second kind. The concept was never developed beyond that.

I was going to make a new thread, but I figured I would put it here. My favorite episode of TOS is City on the Edge of Forever. I think its one of the only episodes that a tricorder is so crucial to the plot (aside from the geological tricorder we see briefly).

To commemorate my favorite episode, I was able to make removable tricorder screens. I did this by printing the graphic and then attaching a thin film of plastic over it. I used some double stick tape that I de-stuck a little, but that removable adhesive 3M puts out would prob be even better.

In total, I made three removable screens. Two from City on the Edge of forever, and a science one I made while I wait for the new tricorders. I stuck them on the inside of the bottom panel drawer to store them.

Pardon the low res cell phone pics:

I should mention that I printed the screens on thick paper and as a result, they don't appear backlit. I can live with that though.

For those interested, Jewelarama pieces abound and can be had at antique stores or on ebay, usually for less than $20.

Yeah, that's cool. :thumbsup I might have to try that myself!
