Dexter's blood slide box, custom or found? *possible spoilers*

I watched the last episode of Dexter tonight. I decided it's be really cool and morbid to have his slide box. I wonder if the slide box is custom for the show or if you can buy them?

I know this has come up before and each thread has seemed to die. My sister works in a blood and tissue lab, so I am going to have her look for it and/or give me medical catalogs to browse through. Does anyone have any good screenshots of the box? There were some good shots of his 'new' box from the end of the last episode of the second season.

LETS FIND THIS PROP! umm... ok, not so good at ralying the troops...

I can only find side hinge wooden slide boxes. Dexter's looks like a box that holds 50 slides. Dexter had 46 slides of his 49 victims in the nearly full slide box at the end of Season 2. I wonder if his box was custom or if it was found somewhere?

I have recently been gathering screenshots of the box and I found a close looking box with the right clasp. Thing was, the slide box opens like the pics you have posted. I haven't been able to find a box that opens like Dexter's.

If the box is not a custom job, I'm thinking that they just moved the parts around and repainted it. If you look at the box, they are almost a cherry type-wood (maybe to match his love for blood).
But looking at both sides of the box, I can't see if the holes have been filled in, the box looks pretty smooth.

From what I've gathered, the front of the box has some grooves from where the box was assembled. I've seen it mostly on cigar boxes when I was tracking down kaylee's strawberry box.

If you scroll down to the item labeled " Wooden Glass Slide Boxes", you can see what I'm talking about. Also, the clasp looks pretty close to what Dexter has.

Once I'm back to my desktop computer, I will post pics of what I have. The best episode that offers close up shots of the box is in the episode from season 2 where Dexter is sat down by the Feds to explain the box. I'm thinking it was episode 07, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, that's what I found too.

I wonder if the slide slots are a lighter wood or maybe plastic? I wanted to see shots of the box on the show up close. Again the last episode of season 2 has some great, up close, shots of the empty box.

And I noticed that it DOES look like cherry. I have a custom cherry pencil box that looks EXACTLY like the wood and finish of Dexter's box.

I was thinking of getting a side opeing box, using the brass hardware and slide slots in a custom box. But I'd rather just buy one...:)

And I'm happy to work on this with you.

Looks like they just moved the hardware around on a stock box.

Holy crow! $70 for a wooden box??????? I guess that makes sense in the context of $5 aspirin and $700 X-rays...

In a fit of cheapness, I found this close substitute at a FRACTION of the price!

I'd love to find one of these boxes, I work in a laboratory so i have a whole buncha slides already, all I need to finish it would be the box!

Anyone have screen shots of the box? The pix from previous threads are no longer working.

Wow - that is a blast from the past. Back in the mid-60s, my parents gave me a microscope for Christmas. My dad also gave me a box of slides from an comparative anatomy class he took - mostly rat and mouse organ sections. The box was like the one on the right. It was unfinished pine (which could certainly be stained cherry) and the dividers were aluminum.

Cool Lynn, I had a similar box in my youth that my Uncle gave to me. It was hinged on the side (not the end) and it had plant cross sections on the slides. The box was wood, the deviders were wood and the floor of the box was either paper or cork lined (can't exactly remember which.)

Anyone know who the propsters were on this show? Maybe we can contact them?

From the screenshots I've gotten from the last episode, it looks like it's wooden and part of the box. I'm thinking that the prop makers didn't bother
looking for a box the right size just fit in slides. I'm pretty sure the script just said "a slide box for his trophys."

But the inside of the box is a lighter colored wood, not cherry at all, so I keep thinking that they did repaint the outside of the box. But then again, why so much work was put into it jut to open at the top?

But this discussion would go alot smoother if I could post pics. If anyone knows which episode that Dexter gets sat down by the Feds in season 2, I can get the pics up right now. I'm also gonna get the 720 HD version of the last episode so we can get some clearer pics.

It's either 8 or 9, but I'm thinking episode 9.*

*But don't quote me. I know he had his own Doakes-in-the-box for tthe last three eps, but I can remember if the one where he first gets him was also the one where Lundy and them call Dexter in because of the slides found in Doake's trunk.

Upon inspection of the box from the last episode of season two, I am inclined to think the box was custom. The hinges are mounted on the outside and not mortised into the top of the walls and underside of the lid. I don't have any good sots of the box from the side. From the top of the open box, the ends look butted together at a 90 degree angle. I wonder if the edges were maybe bisuited or crennelated? Again I need to gat a good look at the side.

And the slide slot thingie that holds the slides strait is definately another wood. Maybe a bass wood, or some other soft unvarnished wood. I doubt pine, but maybe.

And the texture of the wood looks ALOT like my cherry pencil holder. I'll take pix of it tomorrow for comparison.

The box looks varnished inside and out, but the slide holder thingies look like a different wood that is untreated.

I was trying to glean more details about the box last night, going only off of the episode "British Invasion." I am trying to determine if the edges look like A or B. I am leaning towards B. I still wonder if this was store bought as a slide box, store bought and altered into a slide box, or completely custom. I am not so sure.

Until there are better screen shots for me (I can watch the 2nd season 'On Demand' and will try to find that other episode with the slide box, though I have no method of taking screen shots from my TV... If only I had a DVD...)

Sorry for the crude drawing - I threw it together this morning at work. If only I had Illustrator on my work PC...

It was difentately Episode 9, "Resistance is Futile."
A nod to Trek? he he...

Here's the wiki with a frustrating image of Dex at the desk with the box in the bag in front of him.

Also, aside from cutting yourself or buying blood at a butcher, anyone have any good idea for the blood on the slides? Corn syrup and food coloring just does not sound right to me.

Dexter always seems to just put the blood on the slide, put the cover slip over it and it's done. He does not use and preservative chemicals or anything. So would the blood dry or turn brown or anything?

Any thoughts?

Looks great! Thanks for bringing that picture to this thread!

If you look at the middle of the box, you can see the outline of where a clasp would go. So now looking at this shot, I'm more inclined towards it being a custom job.

If you look very closely at the top of the box (not where it opens), you can kinda make out some faint outlines of where the hinges were. I will try to get better shots of this.

Now we need to find a cheap box, not the $50-$60 one thats been posted, but a cheaper alternative.
