Dethaniel's 3d printable Plasma Caster (Borderlands 2)

Hey everyone, this has been a long project in the making since I've decided to do an Axton build. Thought I would recreate the exact gun that carried me through the game. Using Solidworks to model and test this baby out.

circuit board is used to drive the heat diffusion panels and control the LEDS, allowing a button to scroll through red/green/blue/purple, incase I wanted to change the element modifier.

Can't wait to see everybody's input on the project

Dude. That is a tremendous amount of modeling. Well freaking done! I have been working on some borderlands projects as well. I look forward to seeing how you finish this off.

What scale are you using?

First post of a project and its already looking sexy!!! Cant wait to see this come together.

Oh, and this is just genius:

Hello everyone, after some finals and projects for school, I am finally home, in which to much joy, my printer was waiting for me.

after a week of calibrating (more to be done), I printed out my first prototype part for the Plasma Caster. Made out of PLA (actual model will be made from ABS), the print came out decently.

As you can see underneath, support material is required and Slic3r's is worst, so I found MeshMixer by autocadd to use for the upcoming results.

also, thank you very much for the positive feedback, I will post as much as I possibly can and hope to hear back from all of you and answer as many questions as I can.

Thank you very much!! I have been following your thread for quite some time!

in terms of scale, the entire gun should approximately be 3' long. I was shooting for smaller (2' by reference) but the grip sizes would not have worked for my hands.

and I almost forgot to show you guys
I had this modeled up when I was taking a break form the plasma caster:

I understand your dilemma. I have my Maliwan SMG at 24" currently. I altered the design to allow for human geometry, which subsequently stunted the tail some. I lost a couple rows of hexagons from the pattern. I'm not losing any sleep over that, I just shot that one from the hip. Not drawing to actual scale or modeling in Solidworks prior to commencing construction will have that.

Hey everyone,

I apologize for my severe delay in communication and update, I has been an insane semester thus far and a lot of work that I have had to perform on the printer
I should have made more progress pictures, but I do bring you a gallery of work:

This piece will require much attention for cleaning because of the nature of support structure on the old software I used and the quality of the plastic I tried using.

IMG_20140504_214730_058.jpg
these pieces will have to be glued together and will require a lot of sanding. The open section at the bottom is where the arduino board will be mounted
IMG_20140504_214904_435.jpg
IMG_20140504_214916_156.jpg
the driver mount ended up working better than expected, and this is what will control the heat diffusors.
IMG_20140504_214957_200.jpg
these components still need to be glued together, printed separately for easy of material usage and quality. these parts will clamp the board inside the gun
IMG_20140504_215033_681.jpg
^ the element modifier in the gun as well as the arduino battery box

IMG_20140504_215139_950.jpg
diffusor panels will have rbg led strips tp be mounted inside, still need to print the translucent light diffusing sheets to put under the mesh.

Last but not least, I have also started an axton pack. I have the classmod ready to be printed. but that will happen after the entirety of the caster has been made.

DOUBLE POST ALERT!

got some progress for you lads:

IMG_20140523_204551_410.jpg

finally got these parts butted together, next part is trying to make a mechanism thatll allow me to detach it from the entire assembly on the account that i had forgotten to take that into account while making the model. shoot.

going to bondo things up to fill in the large gaps between the pieces. Then, i need a more efficient way to smooth out the whole assembly without covering it in bondo and the plastic doesnt sand very well, anyone aware of a good filler primer? i was considering autobody-high density filler primer, anybody have a clue if thats a good idea?

Danny

That looks like its going to be awesome!!! It's such a shame about all the smoothing needed on 3d prints :cry.

Regardless, it's looking stunning and I can't wait for another update!!!

sorry for the lack of updates, folks. I have not made much progress on the plasma caster. but I did set one night aside for a fairly decent print of one of my other models.

and voilà

(equipped with belt loop for costume etiquette.

I will hopefully have time soon to continue on the smoothing process, it is quite time consuming.

and if anyone has any references to more BL guns being made out there, I would love to see and chat

Give wood filler a try for smoothing your prints. It spreads on incredibly easy, and you can smooth it out with a wet finger. Sands so much easier than Bondo, and you don't have to worry about harsh chemicals!

Even bigger plus, wood filler is dirt cheap compared to body filler!

Fantastic! I am trying out the wood filler right now. I'll let you know how it goes.
In the mean time, I have been following both BR's and drjag's pages for quite some time. Great work all around. the Hellfire will be a future project for me and cant wait to see how all of ours turn out.

Well folks, I apologize that it has been such a long time since I've updated this thread due to living conditions affecting the ability to use most of my tools. Since then, I have done tons of modeling, printing, and programming.

Most of my updates and newer borderlands associated projects will be located in this new thread:

Just to show here, is the new paint job that I am quite proud of

I'll still try to post here, but most likely, for the newest stuff, I would suggest following the newer thread.
