Denix Mauser / Blaster Assembly Info

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Finished up my kit today. I decided to take scottjua's advice on the enamel and I'm really pleased with the results. Instead of using steel wool I wiped off the enamel with a rag while it was drying to give it a rough look and let some of the original finish show through a bit. I used the same method on the grips and got a really nice darkened look that still lets a little bit of the original brown color show through like you can see on the archive images. I also sanded down some of the edges where some wear would occur, although you can't really tell with these pictures since I only had my phone available.

Here's a close up of my flash hider.. since the prop didn't seem to have much weathering I decided to go for more of a dirty/grimey well-used but not damaged look. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out

Dude your Blaster looks awesome. You said you used a satin black enamel. What kind did you use and is that a spray paint or do you brush it on ?

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Thanks! I used Rustoleum satin black enamel (the spray version). I used an oil paint on the flash hider and I think it does a good job but it takes forever to dry fully. There's probably a better alternative out there..

Awesome job!. Did you use the satin black enamel on everything but the flash hider (meaning mauser, kit parts and grips)? How did you go about finishing the flash hider? It looks like more of the paint stayed in the crevices with a lighter coat on the flat surfaces, giving it more of a grimey look like you said.

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Yep! I used the satin black on all the parts minus the flash hider. I did each part separately to get a slightly different look between the scope/mount, grips and the mauser itself. As I mentioned above I used a fairly generous amount of spray and then wiped the parts down a bit with an old rag. I found this to work best on the grips as it allowed them to darken while still allowing some brown to show through. I used pretty much the same method with the flash hider. I dabbed it with a small brush and the black oil paint, making sure to get some in the crevices and areas I wanted to be darker, then wiped it down with the rag. I repeated this a few times to get the look I wanted but as I said earlier I'm having trouble getting the oil paint to dry fully so I don't know if I'd recommend it :)

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Thanks Curmudgeon. I am considering all the alternatives before jumping in and finishing mine. My MR ESB DL-44 blasters look more like they were finished in flat black. Anyone consider doing the mauser in flat black and the kit parts in satin to give it more of a contrast?

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Question ? Are all of the parts painted. There is a rivit on the top of the scope do I paint that or should it stay silver?

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

If you look at the Lucas Film Archive pictures the blaster looks like it had a heavy coat of black on all of the parts so I would say yes to painting the rivet

Thanks that's what i thought but i always think it a good item to check with the experts.

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Is there a picture somewhere showing the proper alignment of the resin circle in the scope tip?

i assume it should be black... Right?

Are we making the grips black or is that on a Friday articulate version?

There isn't a shot if the tip in the Han blaster but there is on of the E-11 scope that shows the orientation.

This has been a point of discussion for a while and I don't think anyone agrees on how it goes, which is why I didn't install them.

Black grips seem to be accurate for more versions of the ROTJ Blaster

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

Questions do you paint the bolt on the top of the blaster or leave the metal showing with just the aluminum black ?

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

I have a question about this picture...

Is it just me or does the scope look as if it is positioned so that the tip is upward and toward the body. It seems to me if you are looking at it from the barrel end, it is at the 1 or 2 o'clock position rather than at the 6 o'clock position.

and speaking of the tip. I noticed that in some images the tip has wat appears to be a brass ring or exposed brass from wear. However, it does not appear to be the same tip we are using for our version.

So my question is, do we know if our tip should have any brass detailing?

If you leave it silver it will eventually turn to a dull gray and look like the bolt on a real mauser

Your first pic is not showing up.

The brass thing is another one of those personal preference details.

I think there were MANY versions of this blaster and none ere exactly alike. So trying to match up different pictures could result in comparing 2 different blasters

I fixed it. It is one that Scottjua posted earlier

Right, I understand that. I'm pointing out the different tip as to make others aware of it so that when I ask, "Should the tip show any brass?" they don't post an image of a different tip and say "yes".

I simply want to know if there is any evidence of brass on the tip of the style we are using.

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

I'm not sure if I see the brass part, but I can see how it could look like that..

Unrelated, it looks to me like the inside of the flash hider is darkened in the first pic MJF posted. I kind of like that and replicated it a bit in mine.

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

OK i am having a hell of a time getting the bolt out and as much as the video has helped me with the rest i can't get the damn thing out. Help please : )

Re: Denix / ROTJ Blaster Assembly Info

DAve is right.... there are many versions of this blaster. MGC AND Live fire. That pic is the Live Fire one. You can see in the bunker outdoor scenes the live fire version has no right side piston either, and the scope mount knobs show brass through the paint too. The brass scope tip is visible only on the live fire... so far that I've seen.
