Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

So around 6mm is perfect?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Mr Bibou, you should use white school glue it is much more flexible when dry than wood glue.Plus it cleans up even when dry if you make a mistake, wood glue is not when dry.Hope this helps

Im in the sealing process now and found plastidip expensive, and wood glue cracks...so I found a product called aguaplast to seal the foam. Its used for drywall repair and has a flex rating of 3mm. It has paper fibers and fiberglass fibers that give strength and flex....I then use sandable gesso as in my thread

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I'm making mines completely from 12mm foam matts. Its a little more challenging to cut but it gives it a beefier look and allows you to simply certain parts...plus they only cost 10 bux for a pack of like 6 at harbor freight. Look up a tutorial on youtube about how to make mountain cuts and heatsealing the foam ..I'm having trouble with the neck though. Any assembly advice is appreciated.

I have a 24in melon and I want to make sure before I print would my head fit in either helmet without changing? if I do need to change the scale would 10% be okay?

Man the big one would make an awesome armor.....by the way how is the Gesso coming along? hey does the parts get harder or they stay flexible? I'm using 6mm foam and it feels too soft

I posted an update in my thread...you can see the progress. The gesso doesnt get hard its stay flexable especially after a few thin coats....I moved from gesso primer to aguaplast as base and it gives it a littlle more body what i like it that it gives the foam some weight so it feels substantiated

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

I have a question. Does anyone know if i would i be able to apply body filler to the foam armor? I know itll tale away the flexibility purpose but im mainly going for detail and not flexibility

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

So I see that most people use high heat glue guns... Is there any reason why I should not use a normal one?

Jackie look for gesso or aguaflex the will fill gaps are sandable and still maintain flex I used it with some great results:thumbsup

Thanks Shadow! I will definitely keep an eye out for those and on your thread to see your results as well

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Hey guys,

I just wanted to give my thanks for all of the people that made these foam builds possible. I also wanted to thank all of the posters here as I've been studying the way you guys have made your suits to make my own. Your help has been invaluable. I've been working on my own suit now for about a month. I still need some tweaking before I start talking the lighting but hopefully soon.

I do have something I hope you guys can help me on. My helmet is a hot mess. I know something is wrong with it. But I don't know how to fix it. The profile is too boxy, and on the side the back seems to come out to far. Can anyone look at this and tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Please note that the helmet was the first thing I built, so it was created on a learning curve. Hopefully you guys can look at this disaster and tell me whats wrong.

Pic is a test shot for a lot of pieces.

Here you can see on how boxy its looking at the forhead and top.

The second is a more finished shot:

You can see where it juts out in the back too far. Any help would be great.

Thought I'd share the images of my progress so far on the foam Mark VI. I will have to scale the helmet up a bit, fits kinda tight right now. Other than that, I haven't had to scale anything yet and seems to fit good. I'll also end up making the helmet with paper and fiberglass the nest time so I can make the face plate open.

hi dude nice build just thought i could maybe help with the helmet the side profile looks fine but looking at it from the from i think your problem is in the angle of the cheek pieces of the face plate seen here....
iron_man_wip_80__by_kolin_roberts-d4r84ki.jpg

the angle is far to sharp and it pulls the face in to much making the head look big i would try cutting the glue joint from the back opening it out a bit and re filling the gap with hot glue shouldn't have to remove the whole piece just open the angle a bit more

hope this helps

Thank you! I hope this will solve my issues. I'll do some surgery tonight and see if I cant get it looking right.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Alright so I did some major surgery on the mask, and at the moment it looks... OK. I will be redoing the mask and giving this one to my girlfriends little brother once I make a better one.

(sadly the armor is now started to make me look fat. In all honesty I'm like 6'2 and 170 soaking wet. I think this may be due to the abs section, and the bigger thighs not matching up to the lower legs [which I will be redoing as well.])

Now its been a matter of making the abs section altered so I can breath. And also so you dont see a gap. I decided to take an unique approach. Hot toys had a great plan with their figures to have an over lap on the top of the abs so when the figure bends, you do not see any gap. I decided that I would make another plate, and attach that to the chest peice with elastic. So when I move, it will bend and move more with the abs than with the chest.

After this gets done I need to work on electronics and my girlfriends rescue armor. This will be fun as I can't seem to find any templates for it, at the moment I'm trying to run a pattern free hand.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Right, i've had a go at building a helmet with 8mm camping foam mat but its not come out as expected.... Its warped and too small. It doesn't help with the natural curve of the foam where its been rolled up !.... So i'm thinking of using thinner foam, will this help ?

I've got 10mm EVA foam gym mats for the armor, any one know how to get a curve to stay in EVA foam ?

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

AdamJ.

I used 1/4 inch foam for mine, approx 6mm. Seemed to work well. I used a heat gun to heat and reshape the foam as others have suggested. I think it worked well, but still need to build another as I made it slightly too small.

Awesome work so far by the way. I hope mine comes out half as good.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

Adam, whenever I ran into warped foam, I just normally hand bent it back into shape before cutting and gluing. If you bend it the opposing way hard and long enough, it will normally be able to take any shape you want it too. You can also do this with a heat gun to make it easier, but I have found I haven't really needed to use it all that much.

Re: Robo3687 - IRON MAN Mark 4/6 Pepakura FOAM Templates -Easy to Build "Green" Versi

that's the same foam i use for all my builds i use a hair dryer and heat it up and it normally sorts it out another issue you might be having looking at your new helmet is the angles of your cutting the cuts look like there cut at 45 degrees so when you glue the top to the sides it makes that joint like 90 degrees and that's where your getting the boxy warpped look try the cuts straight and let it curve naturally
