Dean Winchester's Colt M1911

I'll be attending Oz Comic Con at the end of the month as Dean Winchester from Supernatural and have started working on his Colt M1911 from the show.

To start with I ordered a toy version from eBay with a removal magazine and functional slide. My only issue is the hammer is fixed on but I didn't expect anything more.

Here is the original toy with nothing altered yet:

I then got an electric engraver and hand-engraved the scroll pattern. I intend to highlight the detail after priming and painting the body.

I'll continue to update this as I work on it and will post various other props I'm working on.

No progress on the gun apart from engraving the other side but I did prime, paint and gloss my "Samulet" and also added scorch marks and dirt in the crevices.

I've now primed and finished the engraving on the Colt and will be painting tomorrow! Next will be weathering the paint job and painting the grips.

Sadly the grips are checkered and Deans M1911 features smooth white grips. If anyone knows another way to get them smooth without sanding them down that'd be great!

if it's a full size prop, your two best bets are to just buy the right kind of replacement grips (1911's have a huge market for grips, you'll find a ton of options, from accurate looking ones, to those you could just repaint, etc), or to put putty/other sandable medium into the checkered grips, and sand that smooth with the top of the checkered bits.

Not sure if it's full size but I'll look into that along with the putty. Thanks.

There is an airsoft 1911 with engraving on Ebay.. Its like 200 bucks but its metal and pretty heavy...

bondo could be popped in there and sanded smooth, even resin. lots of materials can be used to fill in the grips.

Milluput (this is my preferred putty for non metal prop work), some of the JB weld products in tubes, like the steelstik, and there are lots of brands of wood putty that would probably work well for filling the checkering. Then sanding it smooth should be very easy. If you're not good with sanding by hand, in the states anyway, there are decent electric sanders available for $25.

That engraving is pretty rough looking. You might want to consider getting a dremel and using one of the engraving tips to give it a bit smoother look. They make a ton of them.

Get another medium first though, even a block of wood, and practice on it first to see which speed, and technique works best. A big part of prop making is tinkering around with your tools, paints, and putty's on practice runs before you tackle the actual prop.

I wish I had the resources to fix the engraving! The con is in a week and I don't own a dremel.

With no chance to get to a store in time I had to leave the grips checkered but I'll eventually fix them up anyway.

Here's the completed gun, weathered and scratched with no orange tip(yet!).

And for fun, here's Sams Colt I made for a friend coming;

This is the first time I've done everything myself with no parents assistance(as I'm only 16) and I ran into issues and also learnt new techniques along the way. Looking forward to more over my life!
