Deagostini Falcon. Anyone seen this?

Has anyone given any thought to a base for the Falcon? Theres a snow base on Ebay but its in the US and shipping /import duty is too high to make it viable.

Yes, I am thinking about custom making one for it based on either the Hoth hangar, inside the space slug or the Cloud City landing pad. I reckon that the landing pad would be too big though. There are plenty of modelling materials to mimic snow and ice out there. Check out Woodland Scenics or Noch.

There is a cover available here - http://www.acrylicdisplaycases.co.uk/FALCON.html - for protecting the model one it is completed. It would be a good idea to take your dimensions for your base from the length and breadth of this or another cover like it.

My favorite was the cloud city Landing Pad.....that would be awesome to have with the whole crew standing in front of the Mllennium Falcon after exiting , meeting Lando......that would be the ultimate look for me.....great idea Trimotor

Hi gyoung2993,

That's what I was thinking about for the Cloud City idea, built in a light box with orange lights to give the colour of the Bespin skies.

A quick thought about scale for figures - the official sources from Lucasfilm, and the Haynes book "Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual", give the length of the Falcon as a real craft at 34.37 metres (34,370mm) The length of the DeAgostini Falcon is 810mm. This gives a scale of 1:42.4. There are, as far as I know, no commercially available figures in that scale. The nearest you can get is 1:43 scale (O gauge). So they will be too large, but this will probably not be as noticable if you have the figures on the landing pad instead of inside the model.

This strange scale is probably a result of a mismatch of scales between interior sets, exterior sets and models in the films. I believe the official figure of 34.37m is a compromise between all three. I also believe that in the past the length was given as 34.75m, which would give the scale of the studio model at 1:42.9, effectively 1:43, which makes much more sense! I would guess that is the scale the ILM model makers worked to.

Trimotor,, you have evidently done your homework and research , I agree the Cloud City Diorama was a definitive choice . I guess , to a degree, no one could go wrong with either diorama !!!......I also agree these figures in scale , wouldn't be noticeable , standing outside in front , as supposed to being inside the actual falcon model, then there would be a slight variance in sizes , I would guess , I could be wrong....Lets hope so !!!....LOL I myself could not get picky at all do to the fact , I have never owned a MF of that size or, any with an interior , as this one will.....the big kid is coming out to play when this thing gets built , I don't care....I will sit there and OOOOOooo and AAAAhhhhh , all day long, till I become satisfied......LMAO...as that commercial said......I'M A BIG KID NOW !!!....LOL
I know , that for a model like this , with the magnitude of detail inside and out , a huge landing base , is a must , to complete this awesome kit indeed !!! Lets start planning...we got 2 years to make this happen !!!...LOL

Since you are interested, I will share my progress on the base with you. I have a few ideas, my plan is to make a couple of prototypes out of cardboard first.

Have you filled out the survey on the DeAgostini site yet? There is an area where they ask if you are interested in certain optional extras, one of the options is figures.

chewbacca.jpg i made a mini chewbacca . just to try if i can make little things.. this is just a try ill make one as soon as i have some spare time...

No I haven't, actually, I have a great connection in the UK, great guy , and has been wonderful in helps , of supplying me with the issues periodically, when I have the money, so I am at this point not dedicated to anything, till these arrive in the US, which at that point , I might convert over , don't know yet....but he said that he would help me in anything I needed....it goes to show , there are great people in this world , to help with something , that we in the US , don't have access too !!! I feel very blessed this gentleman has helped me tremendously !!! I have an earlier photo of a few issues in my collection thread....don't think when that picture was taken with the Hasbo falcon , if there were more than 4 issues at that time , don't quote me on that....but these pieces are mindblowing !!!

Just got a response from DeAgostini Benelux. They are not releasing this in Belgium and don't know if they ever will :-(... I would have been so in for this if they released it...

I've just seen that De Agostini's Australian distributor, Bissett Magazines, has just announced they are releasing The Official Star Wars Fact File...again but nothing about the Falcon.

This sentence deleted due to incorrect information. De Agostini would have been getting details of whether the magazines sold and how quickly the issues sold out as well as having people monitoring various forums like The RPF to gauge the overall feel about a partwork Falcon as well before committing to it.

DId they do the test run in Belgium?

No, they wouldn't have. Because it was a test run it would have only been restricted to the UK and even then it would not have been the entire UK. De Agostini would have been getting details of whether the magazines sold and how quickly the issues sold out as well as having people monitoring various forums like The RPF to gauge the overall feel about a partwork Falcon as well before committing to it.

They did the the test run over here in Germany, too, that´s why I asked. So all countries without a test run are definitely out of the race. Here´s hoping that they do the full run over here in Germany.

My bad.

However. The test run did not reach Australia but Australia is DEFINITELY getting it. We just don't know when.

I really hope this will be such a success in other countries, that they'll decide to do release this in Belgium too. We have quite a big Star Wars community over here, so they would be stupid to skip the Benelux market (or Western Europe in general)

There are two possible reasons I can think of as to why it is taking so long for the series to reach other countries;

1- Regional licensing issues - I think this has been mentioned before on here. If you are wanting to market a licenced product from a franchise in a different country or region to where you currently market your product then you will have to pay additional fees for that privilege. If they did a test run in Germany also then it stands to reason that they have the licence for there as well as the UK and Ireland.

2- Production capacity - Now that the series has started on a full run here the factory in China who are subcontracted to produce the parts are committed to fulfilling the orders for the run. Without knowing how large this company is, they may already be running at close to capacity with a run for the UK and Ireland market. Remember that many of the parts in this series are hand finished at the factory to some degree (Weathering washes etc.). Companies producing models or model parts in China are also experiencing some difficulties at present with rising wages and other companies poaching their workers. There was an interesting article in the modelling press in the UK recently about this.

A further issue regarding countries where English is not the first language is that the magazine articles will have to be translated by a professional translator so that they make sense. This would make it far more likely that Canada, Australia, New Zealand and especially the USA (A huge market with a undoubtably massive licensing fee, which is probably the delay there) will be the next to get a run.
