Dead Space: Downfall Security jacket/ Divet pistol

Hi,
I'm new here but I have a couple projects that I would like some help with.
To start with can anyone recommend a hardy material for fake guns that is repetitively friendly to new makers?
secondly I've got a couple of rough sketches to go off of but I could really use some help with finer details like attaching heaver parts to the jacket.
I guess that's as good a start as any.

So here's an update on the project.
I've mocked up the basic shape and size using cardboard as shown below (each square in the photo in 5mm by 5mm) and I plan to make the end pistol out of high density foam.

It's looking good so far. I'm amazed how little love deadspace got with props and costumes compared to other franchises.

Thanks, I think that the dead space franchise it a bit dark (literally colour wise). Although i have seen a few full suits of Armour, But very few weapons.
To be honest it might be down to the change in weapons from game to game.

Still working on the gun at the moment.
