Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

[/QUOTE]There are several ideas for attaching the different armor pieces together. I have not made a real world suit yet so I wouldn't be the best person to give that advice. Stealth has a video tutorial up for attaching the foam armor. Look him up on youtube under 'The Hero Tutorials'. Also there are several good ideas in Robo3687's thread for the Mk IV/VI pep files.

The abs are made as a series of interlocking plates that will be able to slide over one another. So while each section is mostly hard and inflexible (if you do the real pep process), each section will slide over the section below it and the sum result will be some mobility. This is the same method that 'knights in shinning armor' used in medieval times. Also think of your spine... each bone is hard but they move and flex with each other so that you can bend over and touch your toes. You won't have that much mobility in the Iron Man suit though. lol

You can build this in many ways. Really it is up to the creativity of the individual making the armor. I have seen people use elastic straps, springs, cables, and belts (as in elastic that goes around the body but is attached to the parts. Of course you could glue it together into one rigid piece, make it out of foam, or make a rigid piece, make a mold and cast it in expandable foam (not sure what the stuff is really called). The idea is that it will move like this when done:

This has been around for a while. Just so everyone knows I am not the one that thought this up. I am not sure who first thought to apply this armor making technique to Iron Man builds.

Just curious as to where you found this and the idea. It's ballin and plan on doing it this way. Is this an actual product or was this homemade?

From the first post:
All parts have now been set to a scale of 23. A password is now required to view the files in Pep Designer. PM me for the password. Files for pepakura costumes and foam templates are still free.

Ok, did you get the Pep viewer for Cameo program from Tamasoft? Follow the instructions and make sure that the Cameo shows up and is selectable. Print out a test page and cut it. See how far off the lines are if at all and let me know if you run into any issues during this process. If you can get this far then post a pic of the cuts on the lines so I can see how far off they are. Note that most of the time the cuts will be right on in one corner and gradually get farther from the print lines as you look towards the opposite cover.

Probably not, I have a lot to do before Halloween too.

Ijust cut out the patterns for the Mk VII chest piece and plan to transfer them to the foam. When I'm done I'll try and summit a picture of it. This is my first chest build and first armor. Any feedback would be a great help. If anyone lives in Boise or near boise that can help that would also be appreciated. Wish me luck.

Real quick question, what would you recommend wearing under the iron man suit? I would think it would have to be red but I'm not sure if it's a body suit like under armor or something more padded. Glove ideas for the under the glove armor if possible to. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I've had my Cameo for a month now and I still can't get the cuts right. :facepalm
The only thing that I didn't post in the below link is that I had to move the bottom registration marks up a little bit because my printer couldn't print where the default marks were programmed. I posted my problem in this thread: http://www.therpf.com/f24/silhouette-cameo-problem-157453/

If you or anyone else here could tell me what I could do to fix this I would really appreciate it! lol My fingers are killing me, and I would love to finish your MKVII suite before IM3 . :lol

A pair of scissors and an Xacto knife go a long way, dude.

I know it sucks and it's time-consuming... but it works without fail.

I'm going with Under Armour, because the foam is insulating and traps body heat. I'm hoping that the combination of moisture-wicking fabric and a couple computer fans in the chest/back will help keep me from a heatstroke in a crowded club or bar.

Also, red isn't the only option. I'm strongly considering grey, because I've done pretty well with resizing and improvising to reduce the areas that the foam doesn't cover. Right now the only exposed areas are the inner elbows and under the armpits, which are grey on the suit.

For the gloves, I bought a pair of crappy cloth Iron Man costume gloves off Amazon, so that the fabric between the finger plates have the rib texture painted in. Keep in mind they're "one size fits all", so some tailoring is in order to get an ideal fit. Specifically the area between the thumb and index finger is way more "webbed" than the image suggests, if that makes sense.
