Re: Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron Build

I hate the way time passes so quickly. Life getting in the way of the important ( well not important, but more enjoyable ) tasks.

Got the final bits of sanding and filling done, its looking pretty damn nice. just about ready for the last ( i fecking hope so ) coats of paint, then its on to casting.

I really love how the lid looks like this, think i might do a weather, rusty, cracked version if i get a chance in the future.

Re: Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron Build

So after the 'Final' sand and paint I noticed a slight imperfection on the visor, so it was another round of filling, sanding and painting :(

After this was rectified, a couple of nice coats of primer and it was on to the final wet sand. Started with a 400 grit, then gradually worked up to a 1200 to get it super super smooth and shiney.

I was then ready for the silicone. I set up a work space with everything i needed to hand, release wax, silicone, thickner, thinner, tongue depressors, cups. Cover my table and floor around it cause thing were about to get messy.

Firstly coated the primed lid with couple of thin layer of Ease Release 200, then it was on to the silicone.

The first layer was thinned down using the thinners, then i applyed a couple of layer over the whole lid.

For registration keys i ended up using silicone mini cupcake trays that i got from the £1 store.

Once i had a good coating of silicone over the whole lid I started to place the reg keys and held them in place with thickened silicone. you also notice that i used thickened silicone to fill in around the ear cones.

Another layer of silicone and it was good to go.

**HINDSIGHT MOMENT*** I really should have waited until i had applied all the silicone on the lid before placing the reg keys, you'll see later on that there was some slight bubbling where they were placed, not the worst thing in the world to happen as the keys were on the visor mostly, which will be removed. Still a bit of a dissapointment.

Re: Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron Build

Next up, i needed a divide for the hard outer coating. I used some salvaged fibreboard sheets, partly to keep the weight down and partly cause it was free :)
Cut 2 sheets to shape, drilled some holes and held them together with some threaded bar and wing nuts.

I applied a good layer of Plasti Paste to the back half of the lid, being sure to leave the reg keys exposed and of course the wing nuts.

Same on the front

Once it had dried, i had the task of removing the outer. For some stupid reason i assumed that Plasti Paste would have a degree of flexibility. . . . it doesn't!!
Managed to get it out, had to trim around the reg key holes, and even some of the reg keys, but in the end, I won!

Heres some of those bubbles I mentioned earlier. :(

Re: Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron Build

I suppose this is what your waiting for eh?

Yup, the first cast. There are some obvious bubbles and a few hollow spots on the visor, and one serious dent on top back panel, but i think this was from the reg key not being in the right place.

These pics are me wearing it, note that i have no padding or anything inside it, so its sittin quite low on me.

These shoots are of my pal who is tiny, there is some padding inside this time, but a bit too much.

I think it looks amazing!! :):):):)

Re: Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron Build

Had a total nightmare trying to release the cast, so i decide another split in the outer was needed.

simple job, not going to explain, i'll just let the pics do the talking.

Very, very cool! I look forward to seeing how you do with the visor. Do you have a plan for the lighting?

Thanks.hopefully i can get the visor done asap.
When Guy-Manuel wears this version, it is unlight, but i plan on doing a version with the light band like in the movie, may even try to copy the silvery paint job?
