D.C.'s Supergirl (tv series)

But here's the question I think we should all be asking. Was this pilot better than the Supergirl movie?

The Supergirl movie had Peter O'Toole doing bad acting, we're talking Liam in Phantom Menace bad.

My main gripe - The "We don't trusts dem aliens" Gov't guy that has to be won over.

Frankly, a better opener that I would have thought. It was fun but it tried to cram in too much.

The characters are a bit arch and the media boss (Calista) was a terrible cliche right out of the "Things You're Tired of Seeing in Movies" thread. I like Flockart, so no problem with her. The concept of her character is B A D and the interactions between her and Kara were awful. Unless the Calista character will become a champion and friend to SG then that she needs serious revamping.

And do we really need Jimmy Olsen in this, is anyone tuning in because they adore that character? Not at all. Make him a new character, especially since he's inexplicably been morphed into a tall, bald, black guy and except for the name has nothing to do with JO at all.

Still, not a bad start, so fingers crossed that this improves instead of going the other way.

You pretty much said what I was thinking. I also like Flockhart a lot, but the cliche couldn't have been more over the top spoof if they'd brought in one of the Monty Python guys in drag to play it.

Also agree with Olsen. Totally pointless to have him move from Metropolis only to change absolutely everything about the character. The sad part is: the character they have isn't bad. I like the actor playing him, and he fills a big brotherish link to Clark. Should've just given him a different name. Is it just that they couldn't think of one?

He saved us...

*shakes head*

Gah! Why did you remind me of that?

Way better but I admit I haven't looked at that movie since forever.

The last crap I took was better than that movie.

Still better than Superman III or IV...

Also, it wasn't Jenny Olsen. It was Jenny Jurwich.

i'm watching a little more of it. only two more acts to go....

so far, I like what they are TRYING to do...they just arn't doing it very well. they are trying to cram WAY TOO MUCH EXPOSITION in . the speeding up of the origin story is fine. her first save is fine. throwing in this alien task force and the explanation of what happened to her ship is WAY too much for one episode. Episode one should have simply been her discovering her powers and having her first save. then you end episode one with either the task force, or the reveal of the alien threat. you don't cram it all in to an hour long show. it's just too much to take in and ruins the fun. this must be a rookie writer.

well see how it ends. what I don't get is, why don't they call that kid who kara confides her secret in at work jimmy olsen? THAT is more what I expect. every time I see hip super star jimmy I just cringe. ugh. that's something I'll never get used to if I stick with this series...

I kind of like superman 4. at least it tried to have some kind of heart. unlike superman three which was just a vehicle for richard prior ;o). only good thing of part three was the clark/superman fight.

huh.. I wonder if they changed the name after all the backlash? I Specifically remember that character being called jenny olsen..

On the topic of Hip!Jimmy, I think someone else explained it nicely, and I've grown accustomed to it because of this explanation.

Jimmy may have started out as the awkward photographer that we are all accustomed to (ethnicity-swap notwithstanding), but after being in Metropolis during Superman's escapades (including all the times Supes has had to save him from his own idiocy), spending time in war zones as a photographer, and taking photos that have earned him awards, it makes sense that he would have become more confident in himself as a person and have "toughened up" over time. You don't find awkward, mewling cowards being sent overseas to photograph wars. They'd never be able to do their jobs.

I kind of like superman 4. at least it tried to have some kind of heart.

The only "heart" Superman IV had was the one it ripped from the fans. It was an ultimately unfinished movie due to Cannon running out of money before it was finished. Even Christopher Reeve took Jon Cryer aside before the movie's release and said it would be terrible.

Agree with you on all points.

Doubtful. The rumors were that she was supposed to be Jenny Olsen, but this was never confirmed by the studio, as far as I know.

So has anyone documented any differences between the leaked and aired versions?

In some places, it seems like they digitally lightened her hair a bit to make it blonder.

There was nothing added to the episode (other than the cast credit overlays), but they did cut a bit out, likely for pacing reasons:
- In the leaked pilot, the morning after she saves the plane when she walks into the office, one of her coworkers says she's a hero for doing some work for him. The aired version omits that and cuts to the next scene with Wynn.
- The second time she's at the DEO base (after getting her ass handed to her by Vartox), the camera shows her leaving the base in a dejected manner and then cuts to an overhead shot of her leaving from behind. The aired version omits the overhead shot.

Also, it may have just been me, but I think they made some minor changes to the score as well in certain places.

It's been incredibly popular to just have a short logo opening and the credits through the first scene. We will see but I imagine it will stay similar.

oh, and regarding the supergirl movie... at least we had the perfection that was helen slater to look at ;o). a cool bulldozer fight....but other than that, the rest of the movie was rather forgettable. the main villains big plan was to kidnap a hunky gardener to do her every whim for christs sake ;o). and her co villain reminded me of diz from Dave Couliers 'Out of Control' for some reason ;o).

It would have been nice to have a crossover with her and christopher reeve though.

That's the producer's formula. He did it with Arrow and the Flash. But I bet most people will think it is fresh and new since this is on CBS and not the CW.

Smallville never trimmed down the credits... Hoping they do follow the current trend though. Opening/title credits are a waste of time.

Unless they go there and just say they were in the *****.

Just saying... media is as media does. ;)

Watched about the first 5 minutes or so but had to put it on hold.
Neat that Slater and Cain are her parents.
Looking forward to watching it... despite Flockhart. I can't even stand the sight of her. And the role she's playing doubles it.

I don't know... I don't like Flockhart either (I swear she's been through so many plastic surgeries she's starting to look like an extra on Night of the Living Dead) or Cat Grant, but there's something appealing about her character, I think it's because she plays Cat as this media mogul who buries herself in her work and in a bitchy persona to avoid feeling any kind of emotions about what she does. However, as you will see when you finish the episode, there's a part where she does an about face on a decision she made when Supergirl comes on the scene. To me, it shows that she REALLY didn't like the idea of what she needed to do and was only happy to reverse that decision.

Well no... It wasn't as popular back then....

That... and it was on the WB or CB or whatever it was then network. I think all the shows on that network had long drawn out opening credits.
Seinfeld made it cool not to have credits. ;)

The standout good: Lucy Lane! I've had a crush on Jenna Dewan Tatum ever since watching Tamara. Too bad she's married to Channing Tatum...

The standout bad: Mondays at 8/7c?!?! Seriously? That's the same time as Gotham. You're pitting two DC properties against each other? Not the wisest of moves. Shoulda gone with a Thursday timeslot to have no interference with other superhero shows.

Ignoring that they would have had ABC's "Heroes: Reborn" to compete against, CBS hosts Thursday Night Football for the NFL. They couldn't have put it there. And as the show is supposedly in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash, they couldn't very well put it on Tuesday or Wednesday. Monday was the obvious choice, especially considering Gotham and Supergirl have very different tones and, therefore, probably slightly different audiences.

Hey all, I haven't read anything in this thread, at least not in quite awhile. So this may have already been mentioned, but the Pilot is free on VUDU right now:

Supergirl Pilot VUDU

I don't know if anyone here uses VUDU, but I figured I would mention it just in case :) I got it (free of course) yesterday, but I haven't watched it yet, so I didn't want to accidentally read any spoilers by catching up on this thread.
