Somewhere in the early 2000s one of the major U.S. networks did a show like that following USAF pilots in training. I think it got canceled because they only had a handful of episodes. I remember they made fun of the one guy because he drove a Porsche 911.

They already did that show. It was the reimagined Battlestar Galactica TV series. And Space: Above and Beyond before that. XD

The French had a series (from 1967 to 1970) called "Les Chevaliers du Ciel" (The Knights of the Sky, translated it comes to The Knights of Heaven).
Very popular series with plenty of adventures for the 2 main characters: Tanguy and Laverdure
