custom cardboard R6 droid...scratch build.

a big thank you to everyone, such kind comments, really really appreciated!
its good to have a fresh perspective on your projects, gives you the momentum to work hard & strive to be better, so cheers guys!

thanks for the feedback WarPig, I shall be giving the PVA glue route a miss, I shall take your advice & try out a few different ideas.
its great to work with cardboard, but its always a problem with how to get a really good finish to builds without going down the bondo road, I've got so many projects left unfinished due to this reason(the wife calls it "my start pile!") but I think you're right...experimenting is the key!

well I'm off to get my crafting head on, more updates soon, have yourselves a good evening.

Very cheap, fairly quick, lightweight and smells like pizza (does it?) - best of all worlds! Awesome build, subscribed. :)
If I am to make a new droid in the future I think I will steal your idea and make one out of cardboard, if only as a model for one in aluminum perhaps. Keep it going!

thanks for checking out my build kevlarr.
so far the build has cost me...a pack of new blades & sticks for glue gun(which are so cheap on eBay its unreal!) so doing pretty well on the old wallet lol, but alas the smell of pizza has faded & gone, but still have the head to make, so I feel a pizza feast is in order this weekend!:D
the whole thing is so lightweight that I'm thinking of making it fully functional, will have to get my brain working on ideas for that, definitely going to have a Bluetooth speaker in there though...again eBay is wonderfully cheap!
thanks for your time buddy, will check in on your build soon.

so its been a week & not much to report today, progress has been slow as its been half term, which is the busiest time at work for me & what little time I've had after has been spent with my beautiful family, so R6 has taken a back seat this week.

OK, this is what I actually managed to squeeze in.
I tried a little paper mache on middle foot, which left the inevitable crazy paving effect... grr! I decided to go ahead & sand it down to within an inch of its life! then primed it & rubbed it down again & more primer DSC_0075-2.jpg ...OK...i give up, i still have no idea why the photos load the wrong way? lol, just tap on them & they're right way up...bizarre!?
the result isn't too bad, not completely over the moon...but i can live with it i guess.
IMG_20140530_195910.jpg the legs are almost there now, ready for mache, it'll be nice to finally get some parts finished as my attention span is failing me at the moment, hence me then starting on the skins of the bodyDSC_0081-1.jpgthe fittings you can see are an assortment of different lids, coffee lids are excellent! as they come in so many shapes & sizes, comes in handy when the wife is a complete coffee junkie!:D

well thanks for taking the time to drop in, hope to have some real progress in the next updates.
take good care all & keep up the great builds.

so!...this evening the paper mache slog started, anyone wanna help? lol.
a quick reminder of where i was at before said paper macheDSC_0088-1.jpg will start the head soon & hopefully have the legs & feet done & painted over the weekend...HAZZAARR!!

You remind me of a dear friend I went to art school with. He'd build stuff using materials at hand, ZIP! ZIP!! ZIP!!!. He'd have a beautiful, finished piece while I was still thinking about what material to use. :lol

thanks Mr.Warpig:D
I've always looked at household trash & instantly asked myself...what could that be useful for?
as far back as i can remember, as a little whipper snapper...i would always take a cereal box, paper, ruler, pencil & scissors with me wherever i went, always making something... ahh the imagination is a wonderful thing indeed! i think this generation are losing out by having computer games & technology do the thinking for them, my daughter couldn't believe that i actually had to visit a library & search through books to find out information lol, YOU DIDNT HAVE INTERNET!!?
anyway...enough of my nostalgic waffle, must get back to the paper mache!
take it easy sir, catch you soon.

well its been a hell of a week & I've hardly time to breath let alone craft...so what's new...doh!
work has been kicking my butt all over the shop, no rest for the wicked! and with new baby arriving in December, the wife has decided that the house needs de-cluttering & the dreaded words that we all fear...DECORATING!!!:facepalm...still before that there's a big sci fi convention this weekend to look forward to...excellent!

anyway, i squeezed in a little time for R6, but nothing close to what I'd hoped to have had done by now...oh well!
DSC_0109.jpg DSC_0119.jpg DSC_0125.jpg foot is fully attached with bolt & starting to look pretty good i think, nice to see the actual pieces in their final colour.

thank you sofaking, things are getting there...slowly!
did a little more today, motivation is real low at the moment though.
so i got one of the legs pretty much done, needs a few more finishing pieces, but overall I'm quite pleased with the way it came out

need to bulk up the middle silver rod, looks a little weak, but I'm really loving the black & red scheme, plus it matches the living room!:D

Nice leg you got there! The rod should be thicker, yes, but you do seem to make some steady progress. It's easy to underestimate the time (or effort) that is needed for a build, nearly everyone does it, so don't worry! ;)

DUUUUUUDE, sick! I tried my hand at an R2 cardboard build... i failed... miserably... BUT you're doing awesome work.
Are you going to go with the 2 leg "standing", or 3rd leg "rolling" style?

hey all, thanks for all your positive comments, much appreciated.

kevlarr you're absolutely spot on mate, the amount of hours that have gone into the build so far is beyond belief, even though its just a cardboard built droid, i do like things done to a certain standard, these things we do are a labour of love...a love for all things geeky! lol.

cheers kev1969, great to have you on board too, gotta love the droids!

thanks shiny94, glad to see another cardboard builder here, you should go back to your R2 build, dust it off & keep going! :thumbsup
definitely going with the 3 leg rolling version, they have so much more character when seen in recline lol, such cool little dudes!
