Creality Ender 3 - Fun with Printing

This is a good video on helping with the stringing effect on the ender 3. Also, Angus is a good guy to watch for general 3D printing, design, etc.

I'm currently considering buying an Ender 3. I haven't decided yet, I may upscale to the CR 10S. I wanted to ask you guys about filament quality. I plan to start with PLA as that seems to be what everyone recommends for newbies. Can you guys make some recommendations among the various brands of filament for beginners? Are there some brands that should be avoided? Does it really make that much difference? I am asking because I was planning on ordering a couple of rolls of filament when I place the order for the printer. I don't want to end up with a big supply of trashy filament.

ya know everyone has opinions about filament, ive used amz3d, hatchbox and a few other cheaper brands without issues. some people swear by th amazon basics, some say its garbage.. some people have gotten cheap ebay stuff that prints like a dream, or ends up being garbage.. id suggest for your first rolls buy from amazon, because if it doesnt work out just return it, its amazon they take everything back!!

I now only use Hatchbox black. I tried many other vendors and Hatchbox beat them all in print quality and reliability. Your results may vary.

i got some other amazon ones, cctree and prline.. the prline was black its not bad, cheap tho, needs some temp fiddling.. the cctree was a neon orange.. does ok for nice shelf things.

Personally, I think for the price, I feel the ENDER 3 has been a very reliable and predictable printer without adding any
aftermarket changes or cost, right out of the box.
The CR-10S is just as reliable but with a much bigger print volume capability.

I wanted to see if my E3 would produce any stringing from point to point as seen in the video, so I modeled two 7.60mm
posts separated by @ 50mm and this is my result after 1hr and 57min.
I have always used CURA 15.04.3 that came with the printer and have been happy with the results.
The firmware is unchanged with all the original components.

I suppose if the E3 is properly set up with filament that melts well, the nozzle can do a pretty good job of laying down the layers.
I use filament from eBay Century brand at 210C and a .4mm nozzle.

I'm a wanhao i3 user and I gotta say those CR-3 prints came out fantastic. I've needed so many mods to get the surface to be where I want them to be...

Here's the biggest problem.. 1 printer..

I have a queue of parts to print that I all want finished NOW lol

Yep :) I've got 2, a CR-10 and an Anycubic Photon resin printer. Initially just got them for different resolution/quality reasons, but quickly discovered how nice it is to just be able to print multiple things at the same time. My current project has a mix of big and small parts, so I can have the CR-10 chugging away on the big stuff while my Photon prints the little parts in high detail. Highly recommend that little guy.

I wanted to make a quick "setup and tear down" enclosure for my Ender 3 using the fairly
inexpensive plastic shelving and pre-cut 24" x 18" x 1/8" plex from HD.
.
I still have to cut down the legs a bit to lower the top lid and add the clear plastic sheet to the far side and back.
I will then add a light fixture to the inside top.
(so far - pictured from the back)

I’m printing up a Boba Fett rifle for my BF manakin to hold. I shopped for a lightweight version last year and they run 250-350 but now I can just print what I want for $20. Honestly, this is the best thing ever. Buying a second one soon.

Are you worried about having your controller in the enclosure itself or are you going to move it later?

My particular enclosure for my Ender 3 is not meant to increase the over-all temperature around my printer.
I will still be printing at near normal room temperature.
This enclosure will be mostly used to maintain a constant temperature and airflow around the printer while still being able
to see inside. Also, it will help to keep the sound (during a print) at a lower level.
It will not be air tight or completely sound proof. Only partially.
I also will need to be able to dissemble, transport and store it easily.

I managed to find some time to work on my enclosure for the E3 printer.
This will be used mainly to help keep the sound and air flow around the printer to a minimum
while still being able to watch the print progress.
I need to be able to disassemble, transport and reassemble without too much effort.
I think this design will work well. (I still have to install the back cover).
